Today I was fortunate enough to come across a good deal on a Springfield Armory 1911 A1 GI. Now I realize this is an entry levell 1911 and so I am in the door.  I would like opinions on upgrades this basic weapon might need.  I will be using this primarily at the range and occasionally as an off duty. (glock 27 is my primary off duty)  I have not fired a 1911 since my military days in the early 80's.  I would also like suggestions on range mags, and anything you 1911 experts can share with me.

Wilson 47d magazines for your shooting pleasure. I LOVE them.

As for what to do to it.....nothing. If it feeds and runs well then shoot the living hell out of it. It is perfect as is

It may take you awhile to figure out if you do indeed want anything else.  For me, a beavertail and a longer bigger trigger is really nice to have.  But it may not be the case for you.  I didn't totally hate it without though either.

All of the things I replaced on my mil-spec Springfield:

1) Much better sights.

2) Long trigger to better fit my large hand(s).

3) NM Wilson barrel. Accuracy IS everything & the two-piece barrels aren't exactly a hot commodity in Brownells.

4) Rubber wrap-around grips. TN is hell in the summer to hold onto normal grips w/o front checkering.

Aside form those, the mil-spec shoots & runs wonderfully!

Get some Wilson 47D magazines.  You won't regret it.  Buy 1,000 rounds of ball ammo and shoot the piss out of it.  Should be fine after that.

Sorry, I have no input about upgrades.  If the pistol is sound and works after the above recommendations, it should be a good piece.

My first 1911 is a GI. Still love it.

When I first got it I was lucky to shoot a 6" group at 20'. I was dissapointed  and got
a Springfield long slide that shot 3" at 20'. i was happy then .After honing my pistol skills, the long slide shot 1" at 20'. Then I tried the GI again and shot 2" groups.

The only change I made was paint the front sight yellow on the GI.

Welcome to the disease.
As for mags I'd recommend either Wilson 47D or ACT-MAGs (Novak).
FYI : The ACT-MAGs are $10 buck cheaper than Wilsons.
I've had both and no failures out of either one, and that's with use in all different brands on 1911's.
