I have been doing research and handling of various firearms over the last few weeks on anticipation of my tax return..... and have essentially narrowed it down to the pistols listed below(or something in the same size range) but might consider others.... any suggestions or considerations would be greatly appreciated ! Intended uses are the range, nightstand, and often ccw. Metal frame is a must
Beretta 92 compact w/rail Para Elite Commander 1911 CZ75 Compact or p-01 Sig P229 (assuming I can have my local gun store get one at a good price) |
|
Disclaimer: I know nothing about the CZ.
The other 3 all possess different ergonomic characteristics and we have no idea which you may/not prefer. I have a ton of (unwanted) time behind the Beretta and a lot behind the others and I know which one I prefer: Overall: 1911. EDC: Sig. Not at all: Beretta. Nothing wrong with the Beretta if you like the way it operates; I don't. Here's a thread dedicated to the Beretta versus the Sig. This question always degenerates into a "it's not a safety, it's a decocker" argument. Whatever it is to you, the question is do you intend to use it (Beretta proponents say that since it's a decocker, you carry with it disengaged) and do you want it on the frame or the slide (a slide mounted safety decocker can be accidentally engaged both in the holster and when manipulating the slide, and since it's not just a decocker, it also prevents the pistol from firing [just like a safety, which it isn't]). |
|
This is how I'd rank them 1911 commander or officer model, anything other than para though Beretta 92 compact w/o rail (harder to find holsters if it has a rail) CZ75/P-01 Sig 229 since you list beretta and CZ's I'm assuming a slide mounted safety isn't an issue for you. In that case you should also look at the old S&W number guns as well as rugers P series. Their metal, heavy, not much to look at, but built like tanks |
|
From those, i prefer sig over the beretta, and i prefer a 1911 over them both.
But as others have said, not para. I'd be looking at Colt or Springfield if i was in the $700 - $1000 price range, and RIA if i wanted to go cheap. I hear good things about CZ, but i have no personal experience with one. |

You’re limiting yourself by requiring a metal frame. If you haven’t noticed, more and more firearms are using polymer…
If you plan on concealed carry, it is hard to beat a Glock. They are reliable, lightweight, and corrosion resistant… Out of your list, I’d probably roll with the Beretta. The only reason is because of how much time I have behind one…

Of your choices:
SIG 229. My 226 is one of my favorite guns ever. CZ75 Compact. Great gun as well, will be heavier than the 229 (steel vs. alloy). Both guns have a great track record and good support for parts, etc. I'm not a 1911 guy, and have limited experience with Beretta. |
|
Already have a polymer frame pistol in the collection, an m&p 45 with all the apex goodies, I will be adding a glock at some point but I've always enjoyed the feel of a metal framed handgun. So far the two cz's listed have the edge. The Beretta is all but out, due to lack of holster availability. Really like the sig 229 as well, but its more expensive the the cz's
Thanks everyone for all the replies thus far! Keep the suggestions/info/considerations coming! |

Are you covered for CCW weapons? Is this what this is for?
Just curious. I know we haven't had it for overly long and I was seriously lacking in carry choices once we did get it because I didn't think we ever would. LOL. And full sized service type pistols are easier to shoot. Anyways.... I was just curious because your post didn't say what your purpose for it was. |

I think in my first post I listed its intended uses as the range, nightstand gun, and it will often be used for ccw. I've tried going with smaller pistols for ccw before and never liked them, I love the size/versatility of the pistols I listed - most will require a good holster/belt and some wardrobe changes to conceal well I'm guessing though. I do not currently have a weapon specifically for ccw. |

Not one you mentioned but if you like sig, I hear a 239 is a good do everything gun. Shoots like a service sized gun but carries like a smaller gun. If I were to do it all over again, that's what I'd be looking at. And then a 229 is a good choice too. I have a Beretta M9 and the gun is so easy to shoot and reliable and a great gun. I have carried it, but it's big. Single stack mags are easier to carry a second one. You give up some capacity of course. But IMHO, when carrying, it just makes it easier. Having said that, tons of people carry double stacks of some sort or another. So..... The 92 compact is cool and I would love one too, but in the end I feel like the Sig has a better, less frills manual of operation and probably a better choice. I do like DA/SA over striker fired for carry guns. It's not a very popular position to have around here, but it's mine. |

Not that I don't like my 224, but because I think I would have liked the 239 for the reasons listed above. |

I have a Sig 239 and love it. When I went to my LGS to buy a 229 I picked up a CZ P01 and bought it instead. I think they're all great guns but none have a grip like a CZ75 variant. The polymer ones are not the same way for me. Asked about the cz's at then store, and I was told there is a waiting list :( |

Or you can order and transfer and no wait CZ custom and Cajun Gun Works usually have them |
