While the 1911 is a good choice in .45 ACP, have you considered one of the 75s instead?

For example, you could get an IMI Baby Eagle in .45 or a Tanfoglio in .45.

Also, if you prefer an American company then Armalite has a new line of 75s they are calling the "AR-24" and they should be out in .45 soon too!

IMO, the guns above are not in the same league as the SA 1911 or the Sig P220.  I would go with the GI, or if you can afford a few more $$ get a Loaded.  The GI is a great 1911 but the Loaded is much more enjoyable as a shooter.  Better sights, beavertail and thumb safeties etc.

As a carry gun, the SIG.  No question.

Lighter weight.  DA/SA, which in a carry gun I prefer.  Accurate, reliable.  Downside, its a tad bulky and the price tag.  But a 1911 ain't exactly small either.

That is the reason I DON'T like Sigs.  I want a consistent trigger pull everytime, DA/SA guns are of no use to me.

'Course, they make a 220 that has a cocked and locked manual of arms.  220 Combat or some such.

FWIW I also think the Witness and Baby Eagle are not in the same class, having owned both.

Good point, I forgot about that.  Still not that good.  I had a P226 X-Five Competition - the high dollar SAO Sig.  The trigger and the safety were not as good as a 1911.  Better than the DA/SA but the trigger wasn't as clean and the safety was really stiff and had little thumb paddles.

Go with the SA 1911.  The Loaded is a little better shooter but there is nothing wrong with the GI.  I do not shoot DA/SA guns very well and my Sigs have not been good to me.  When people talk of the best handguns, the two that come up the most are the 1911 and Glock.  Sigs IMO are no longer in that hunt.  Again just IMO.

I would take the P-220 over the mil-spec 1911. Two advantages that the Sig has is that it is a bit easier to install night sights and in my experience, they are considerably more reliable when using different types of hollow point ammunition. The Sig is lighter as well if you are going to carry it. If you really want a 1911, I would try to get a higher grade pistol if it is for carry purposes.

My first .45 was a P220.  Later, when I had more scratch, I bought a nice scandium-framed 1911 for carry.  But for what it is, the '220 is an excellent weapon.  It's got a really good (and deserved) reputation for accuracy and dependability.  For my money, the G.I. model isn't what I'm looking for in a 1911.  I need some of the newer bells and whistles.

Thanks guys!!
I passed my pistol safety course on Thursday
I shot a whole bunch of handguns on Thursday, including the 220 and 1911.
What I learned at the course and when I've  shot handguns before is that I don't like revolvers, pocket sized handguns, DAO handguns, or non .45acp pistols.
The instructor had me shoot a sig 228 9mm then a sig 220 .45, to me no difference.
So I am going to get a sig 220 when all paper work goes through.

Another? what’s a  good carry rig for the 220?
And thanks again guys!

Mark, the soon to be sig owner
