my best friend recently inherited his fathers gun,a s&w 38 "police special" originally his grandfathers.there is surface rust on the outside and rust in the barrel,i cannot tell if the barrel is pitted.

if the barrel is pitted is it a lost cause or if it is only surface rust will all it take is a good cleaning to get it shooting again.i didn't get a good look at it because of the light.

it's a nice looking revolver,it be great to get it shooting shooting again.any suggestions?

any suggestions?

A) Clean the hell out of it.

B) Don't shoot it until a gunsmith has looked it over!!!!!

C) Listen to the Gunny:

No.

It may lead more with lead bullets, it may not be as accurate as it once was, but a pitted bore is not a no-go.

Lots of old mil surp rifles have pitted up bores and shoot just fine.

Well, I suggest you scrub the barrel out really well. Use a bronze brush and some decent solvent and let it soak for a good long while between scrubbings. It may just be built up lead.

Then shoot it with (preferably jacketed) bullets and clean it again.

By then you should be able to tell if it's pitted up or just dirty.
