I have someone who offered to sell me his s&w .357 mag.  He said it was a state police[can't remember the state] issue weapon and offered to sell for about $400.  He also said it was stamped as a state police revolver.  I'm just curious as to what reasonable price would be.

Thanks

Without a model number, there's no way of telling. It could be anything from the standard Model 13 for $250 all the way up to a previously-unknown Model 520 for $800 or more.

Here is what he was able to give me: "Smith and Wesson 357 Highway Patrolman"  the serial # Is "N19****"

I don't know if this is enough but thanks for your help in advance.

Sounds like a model 28.  They are a no frills version of the Model 27.  The N frame .357s are very nice revolvers.  The Model 28 has a more subdued finish than the Model 27, which is polished bright blue.

Check your blue book value on that model.

In excellent shape, a S&W Model 28 will bring a high of about 600 for a 4 inch non-model marked, five screw. More commonly seen are the 28-2, which go for 400-500 in four inch and 50 bucks less with six inch barrel.

as he said except I'd just add those prices are for near mint in the box. for an old cop gun stamped by the department you are looking at somewhere between $250 in poor shape to $375 for a nicer one.

Model 28s are now selling for $400 here in TN. I sold mine about 6 months ago to help finance my IPSC gun. It had a FINE single action trigger to it from the factory. I urge you to BUY IT!

Shoot some .38sp wadcutters out of it, it'll be like shooting a .22!

Coulda told me.

I'm a Model 28 nut. I'm currently looking for a "beater" at a good price to have hardchromed and make it a carry gun.
