what barrel length constitutes a snub-nose revolver? is there a certain length?

It's really in the mind of the beholder. The S&W J frames with 1 7/8 inch barrels are, without a doubt, considered "snubbies". I also consider the 2 1/2 inch barrels to be snub barrels, since the barrel is so short that the ejector rod is not full length.

I would venture to say anything under the 4" size would probably be considered as such, IMO.
