so i bought this G.I.45 about a month ago, all was well until tonight when i was doing my weekly firearms check.  i notice that the safety(thumb safety) wouldnt go from safe to fire position.  i look at it a bit then realize(forgive me for not knowing the technical terms here) the cylinderica detent for the safety is loose allowing the detent to jump on the outside of the safety.  i am hoping this is something i can take care of my self, but have no clue as to what to do.  i would appreciate any help you can lend.

I'm not sure what you're describing, but it sounds like the plunger tube came loose at the back end.  Usually it's a very easy fix for a gunsmith, but requires a special tool.  I would send it back to Springfield Armory to have them fix it.  It will  only take a couple weeks, according to the many people who have commented on turn around time lately.  Otherwise, any pistolsmith that works on 1911s can fix it easily, and it should not cost much.

I would send it back to Springfield if I were you.  You can probably fix it yourself, but why?
