picked up a cheap 1911 this summer and wanted to spend some time this winter playing with it. it's a charles daly, owner had installed some good parts but- it is what it is, a good project gun to learn on. owner apparently had some feed issues- as soon as he said that I looked at the feed ramp, and it was obvious that he had re configured the ramp, probably with a dremel. I picked it up for next to nothing, since the owner wanted to be shut of it.
I'm an experienced welder, but no milling machine. I'm thinking a wire feed to rebuild the ramp. any advice?

No go. You need to mill the old ramp out and solder replacement insert in it's place. Call Brownells tech support and they can walk you through what's needed. 800-741-0015.
