i just got my 229 today, and have a question. i haven't been able to fire it yet.
it seems that when i pull the trigger, the hammer does not hit the firing pin. It may be hitting it and bouncing off, but i can't tell. is it supposed to be this way?

Yes, there is a spring that holds the hammer from the pin.

Yes.
If you cock the hammer, then pinch it and pull the trigger, you can slowly lower the hammer and see that it strikes the firing pin.
