.22lr or 9mm would be the way to go imo i probably would opt for 9mm--ammo is fairly cheap, can be used as HD,ccw, or other uses of personal protection, would also be a good starter to get use to recoil would go w/ a glock -19 h/w /22lr is cheaper to use and ammo is cheap browning buckmark or ruger mark II |

I would say that a CZ-75B would be a better choice for a beginner - and with the addition of the .22 Kadet kit, that would be THE ultimate starter pistol... The CZ can be had for under $400, the Kadet kit about $225 - that way, you could shoot 9mm or .22... I really think it's a good idea for a beginner to have a safety on their gun - and with the CZ, you'd learn the same manual of arms that applies to a 1911, as well - not a bad thing... Although a fine pistol in it's own right, it is said that a Glock doesn't suffer fools well - I believe it's a weapon better suited to the more experienced - there is a reason why LEOs have SO many AD/NDs with Glocks... Besides, it's quite possible that the CZ-75 is the cream of the crop in the "wonder nines" - I think every handgunner should own one... Also, the CZ is likely to be the more accurate of the two, and will DEFINETLY have a better trigger... - georgestrings |

For a beginner handgun shooter, I strongly recommend a .22LR. IMHO, a DA revolver (Tuarus or S&W) is best for a beginner. I like my Taurus 94. Or .22LR SA revolver - Ruger Single Six, but heard good things about the Heritage Rough Rider for the money. If you want semi-auto, a .22LR Ruger Mark II is hard to beat. (Safe to dry-fire). If you want to upgrade to center-fire later, a gun with conversion kit might be good, but a bit more money. |
I have a Walther P22 for plinking and playing. Great little .22 for the money. Ammo is .99 cents at walmart for a box of 50. Or 7.99 for a box of 550 (called a "brick") The Walther will run you around 229.00 Brand new in the box. Good deals on used Glock 19s can be found for around 400 or so. Kinda depends on what state/city you live in. 9mm ammo at walmart runs 10.96 for a box of 100 (the Winchester "Value Pack"... commonly referred to as WWB or Winchester White Box around here). |
