I have looked around and searched but I can't find what I am looking for. First off, it looks like most people suppress 9mm and .22. Some say that .45 being dry suppressed is still too loud and you need hearing protection. What about .40? I have a Berretta 96 and was thinking about suppressing it but I have no idea where to find a threaded barrel and I have no idea if it could be suppressed enough that you don't need hearing protection. Maybe a lot of people don't do it because of the way the normal .40 bullet is shaped? Anyone done a .40??? |

Although I don't have a Baretta, or a .40 for that matter, I have used Jarvis barrels in my .45s. They are top quality and have great customer service. Check out Advanced Armament and Bruegger & Thomet for suppressors. I haven't personally used these on a .40, but when fully injected, should take the dbs to a safe level. It may be possible, but it has never been my personal experience nor have I ever read about it before your post. Point of impact may change between suppressed and unsuppressed, but it shouldn't increase group size. |

i canned a 45 and a 22 at this time, the 45 is a quiet can, but I always run it wet. The 230 grain pill is already a sub sonic round, so no specialty ammo required. With 22s sub sonic ammo is the way to go, there is a big difference between it and hi velocity ammo. With the 9 you need subsonic 147 grain ammo, a tad more hit to the wallet, but I don't think they get as quiet as the 45s IMHO. I was looking into a 40, with 180grain loads, its right there at the sub sonic level, I was mid project but dumped it when a 45 can fell in my lap. In theory it should run pretty well, but I haven't found a single person who has one yet, everyone is 22,9 or 45 be the wildcard hop out there! HTH James |

since i have never fired a weapon with a suppressor on it, would it be safe to shoot them without hearing protection? the other issue is I don't want to buy specific sub-sonic ammo. If it was a grain issue say: 165g was not subsonic but 180g was, well then I would just shoot 180. I don't want to buy specific ammo to shoot. I have a .45 1911 also but I thought that might be too loud. But since you guys are saying that you don't need subsonic ammo for that and a standard 230g round is just fine, I may have to look into that. |
Yes.
230-grain .45 ACP is already subsonic, so no need for special ammo. |
| I put a SOS 45 can on my Springfield Operator, and its a kick butt package, really draws the looks too. I have shot the USP package, but it just didn't blow my skirt up like the 1911 package does, it turns an excellent defensive gun into an excellent offensive weapon. |

Here's mine. It's a Mark 23 with the SWR HEMS2 suppressor. I recently sent my 1st generation HEMS back to the manufacturer for an upgrade to the latest specs. It is still very loud indoors and you should wear hearing protection. The bullet hitting the backstop is louder than the report, but the blast without earmuffs will still hurt your ears.

hmm, just noticed that they are no longer making the SOS, funny as the blackside is cheaper, and a tad shorter, but not by much. Pics in a few down and dirty no porn pics, but you can see its not a wide as that new Blackside can, and my front sight just clears the top of the can. When shooting a good but, the heat waves will screw with the sight picture, but I can't think of a real reason to change the gun from its present format.    hope this helps |

Hey jimmyjoebob, I forgot to ask you something about your operator. I really didn't look at them since I had an ultra compact from springfield and it didn't do much for me. Looking at the operator, it is very expensive, a little more than a HK USP Tactical. It looks very impressive but how does it perform. I have been reading that the HKs can go around 24,000 rounds without failure of components. Now I don't know how many consective round they go without FTF or FTE but I hear it is somewhere around 3,000-6,000 or something like that. How many FTF or FTEs or just failures have you had with your operator if any? |

well when it comes to running supressors you can throw all the numbers out the window. The reason is that with supressors, people normally use grease in them to quiet the can even more, with pistol design, the grease will get sucked back through the gun and all over the insides of the weapon. After a while you definately need to clean the gun. The Operator I has is what was called the Milspec Operator. I lucked up into it a while back for $300. Definately a steal of a deal. This is by no means a TRP operator with the bull barrel. The previous owner had it cut for a bomar adjustable rear sight. I gutted the slide and frame and totally rebuilt the pistol including the barrel. I can go into details if you want. |

I don't use water, I use lithium grease, it lasts longer but its messy. The best all around substance is believe it or not vaseline. It does not smoke when it burns, but its a pain in the ass to load into the supressor. And your right, the running joke is we really call it the kimfield whoperator, since it has a several kimber parts( thumb safety and grips), along with KKM match grade barrel( had it opened up a bit to feed anything from good ammo to reloads), Ed Brown, Wilson, Grieder,STI, and the mainspring/laynard combo is from the people that make that 50 GI 1911. So your right, its not near a basic Springfield, but she runs great,and is a head turner for a working gun |
