well i'm going to be 21 in february and i'm exploring my options I found a taurus PT92 at gandermountain that caught my eye someone else keeps telling me to just get a real beretta are there any problems or downsides to the taurus I should know about? I just don't want to get it and be dissappointed in it and I may actually carry the thing on occasion so I wanna be able to rely on it |
What's the primary use of the handgun? ETA: The G17 should be a little easier to CCW. Extra mags would be cheaper. No manual external safety. Of course, the #1 safety is the gray matter in your skull. Both would be a good handgun for 1st time purchase. I'm a Sig man and have to tell you to check out a Sig P225/P6 too.

open carry sidearm for all cases where I can carry openly legaly (mostly camping and the like) it is not intended for conceled carry, i'm getting something else for that |
| I would say go with the PT92. Not only is the price tag nice, but having owned a glock, sig, and taurus, the only one I still have is the taurus. I didn't like the sights or trigger pull on the glock I just never seemed to be able to hit anything with it. The sig felt to big in my hands when I put hogue grips on and hitting the decocker isn't as easy as that of the taurus. Another plus if having the decocker/safety as one "button". The only problem I have had with my taurus is trying to run it with a suppressor, but that is a matter unto itself. |
| We are fortunate and blessed to own more than a few of both the Beretta and Taurus 92 types (including a Beretta Brigadier Inox which I suppose is meant to be the Caddy of the 92fs line), and I would suggest without any doubt that you get a Taurus PT92 or PT99 because of the frame mounted safety and the light rail. If you want to make the Taurus super-sweet so that you’ll never find yourself wondering ‘should I have gone with the Beretta?’, get a set of the Hogue rubber-pebbled grip panels (for under $20) and install them. |
I'm not a big fan of the Glock, but I say go with the Glock 17. It's harsh environment reliability (mud, snow, water, salt water submersion) speaks for itself. |

well I dunno I still can't make up my mind I might not go with the beretta (at least the one me favorite FFL has) cause he'll be leaving town soon and not come back thii late march to early april I turn 21 feb 4th, I can't wait that long I need to handle a taurus too, have a gunshow coming up on the 4th and 5th mabey I will there |
| Hm. I have both and to be honest, I shoot the G17 a LOT more. The 92 at $320 new was a good deal and it does have a good single action trigger. Mags are a little more and not as available locally. One downside of the 92 is that the front sight is part of the slide so you'll have to improvise of you want something sifferent up there. I'm not whether Taurus has a 92 model with a dovetailed front sight. The 92 is a full sized pistol and not the lighest (I think that the Beretta is even heavier - better metals maybe?) so get a good belt. I've also found that finding a good non tactical holster a bit challenging if you get the 92 with the rail. Not many if any of those problems exist with the G17. That said, I'm not getting rid of my 92 either... 92' also come with that stupid integral lock... |

Not sure about prices where you're at, but I picked up a PT92FS brand new here in TX for $359 at a fun show about 6 months ago. Great value for the price. I've seen posts here on ARFCOM that Taurus can be a real PITA when it comes to warranty turnarounds though. Hopefully I'll never have to find out. |
I believe they do, I have a PT99AFS that I totaly trust. I've put about 12oo rds through her whithout a hiccup. I bought the piece back in '93,after I got out of the Army. I was used to either carrying the 1911 or the M9. I never liked the slide mounted safety/decock. Also, the Taurus came in stainless, whereas the Baretta at the time didn't. I still have this wonderfull piece of machinery and would'nt even consider selling it. The slide runs smooth and true. |
Yes, IF you cut a notch in them for the mag catch. It is different. ( was at least when I had both ) I preferred the Taurus over the beretta personally but they are very close to the same damned thing. I just like the frame mounted safety better. |

The Taurus and Beretta mags have a different catch. Taurus contracts their OEM mags from Meg-Gar, you can find the Mec-Gar logo on them. So just buy Mec-Gar replacement mags. Budsgunshop.com is one place to get them. I consider the Taurus 92 to be one of the best handgun options out there. If you cannot afford an HK, Sig and the like then the Taurus is for you. A Glock has an unnatural slope to the grip, you have to practice to get the hang of it and keep practicing. No thanks! I'll take a natural feeling piece. Taurus 92, or HK USP are my choices, if needing compact then a Kahr. I have had a PT-92 since the late 80's. many other hand guns have come and gone. But I always felt the PT92 was a keeper. |
Both would be a good handgun for 1st time purchase. I'm a Sig man and have to tell you to check out a Sig P225/P6 too.
