Maybe i've been smelling my pits to much but I was just thinking.

I know you get drop in comps for 1911's. Basically the comp is part of the barrel bushing and as such no gun smithing required and you have a comp. Is there following the same logic a barrel bushing that has thread so you can attach a sound moderator? Well whatever you might want to screw on the thread.

Or am I totally missing the plot and will that not ever work?

The sound suppressor would be forced to recoil back with the slide. Therefore the inside would have to opened up large enough to fit the barrel, making the first couple sets of baffles almost useless. On top of that the increased weight of the suppressor atted to the slide would almost definately keep the action from cycling.

ETA: not to mention the sound suppressor would have to be small enough around on the first couple of inches to keep it from impacting the slide under recoil.

I think you may be right I'm not sure how to explain the physics of it but I'm quite sure this will not work or somebody would've already done it by now. The silencer has to be connected to the barrel to do the "supressing".

didn't think longer than my nose is long. as soon as i read the first couple of words of the first reply i realized that i haven't thought this through.

oh well. back to sniffing my pits.

Also this is why i'm a software developer and not a gun smith.

There have been experiments with frame-mounted silencers. They generally haven't worked out very well. I would imagine a slide-mounted can would be just as bad. Aside from being a purpose designed can and thus probably expensive, it would probably have to be dedicated to that host, killing it's versatility, and on top of that the design requirements in order to get it to function, and eliminate baffle strikes, would probably leave it a poor performer.

Like this idea.

But you guys are 100% correct. I really didnt' think further than the mounting. When the first reply came in and i realized that my "idea" didn't take into account cycling at all....I was looking for the UNDO button.

But so we learn.

I heard that a long time ago somebody made barrel bushings with ID threads the same size as a 2 liter soda bottle. In the story I heard, "the ATF frowned upon it". They are no longer being made.
