been thinking of getting a new .22 handgun, after looking around in my favorite gun store here in town, two items have piqued my interests.
the Chiappa 1911-22 with spare mag at ~325

or the Ruger SR22 with a spare threaded barrel at ~425

which one of these do you like best? Discuss.

Update: Fo'ed bought the Ruger!

Ruger SR22. Absolute joy to shoot!
Put some stingers in it at night, the flash looks like a nuke just went off!

Mp22 is solid. Its the only part poly 22 id buy. Other than that nothing but the proven steel rugers or buckmark.

I really like my Sig 1911-22. It took a couple hundred rounds to become reliable but now it's a blast. Same size and controls as a full size 1911. Rugers and Buckmarks are great too

Why not get the best?

Though, admittedly, I own a Ruger 22/45.

This is the best (of its kind) still being (sporadically) manufactured. I own one just like this and it's so nice I got rid of the others. They were just sad by comparison. Mind you, it weighs 42 oz. It's a bench gun. One of the best ever made. That being said, the SR22 is probably the coolest little .22 out there right now. I'm gonna get me one for plinking.

Of the two you named the Ruger all the way.

If you're not concerned with emulating a handgun of a larger caliber, the Buckmark is hard to beat.

I love my SR22, and just ordered the TwinTech threaded barrel for it.  Gonna be fun with the Sparrow I finally got the stamp for.

Do you have a 1911 already? If you do then why not get a .22 conversion kit like a Marvel for around the same money as the Chiappa?

M&P 22.

But then you'll have to buy an M&P 9 as an accessory...

I really like my M&P 22 for plinking and general practice.

When comes to target shooting or hunting I'll stick with my Buckmark or Mark II.

Ruger 22/45 series. Comes in many forms , many options.

Do the slingshot mod  - KaneWolf
Tandemkross bushing - Bushing

Get some good 1911 grips if you get the removable grip model.
Upgrade the sights and you will have a great reliable easy to clean and work on weapon.

None of the above.

If you want relatively good accuracy and the ability to shoot pretty much any ammo, I'd get a CZ Kadet. They're reliable and accurate. (Buy/modify a magazine loader--the 22 mags are pains to load.)

Otherwise, I'd go with a pre-key Smith 617 or K-22. And get an accurate 22 that works with pretty much any ammo.

I could never get my Smith Model 41 to run reliably, even with CCI Standard or Mini-Mags. Replaced it with a pre-key 617.

I'm not sure the Ruger has been thoroughly beta tested by the gun buying public yet.   I would recommend it over anything Chiappa makes, though.

Smart money is on the tried and true MKIII, 22/45 or Buckmark.

Would tend to agree with ken mays- a target grade 22 is a must for every hand gun enthusiast. All these tactical trainers do have a purpose but one of the hallmarks of a really good 22 is accuracy. I have owned or shot a bunch of smith 41's and they would always be my first choice in a true target grade auto loader. For something not quite as expensive the ruger standard autos or marvel 22 conversion kits are very good.

Of the two that you mentioned, I would pick the SR22. My favorite .22lr pistol is the Bersa Thunder 22. This is the selection from my current list of .22lr pistols/revolvers in my safe as follow (I will be picking up the SR22 in the near future):

Bersa Thunder 22 Nickel
2 x Ruger 22/45 MK II Stainless Bull Barrel
Browning Buckmark
Taurus PT22
Auto Nine
Ruger Single Six with .22 WMG conversion
S&W 17-3

I agree with Dan.  I’ve shot my brother's 22/45 lite suppressed and not.  I’d go with that if you don’t want a MKII/III or Buckmark.

I don't own the M&P22 but know somebody that does and it does indeed seem solid.  I've got Buckmarks and Rugers and they are good.

I have a Mark II Government Target Model and a 22-45.  They are both great guns that can give a lot of trigger time.  I use them to practice for other shooting sports.  They've worked great and are both very accurate.  Many gopher would attest to this fact if they could.

"Other"

Get a .22 conversion for your favorite carry pistol.  Cheap practice and for some reason .22's seem like SOOOO much fun to shoot!
I use Sigs as my primary home gun (p226) and often carry a p229.  Bought a .22 conversion for the p229 and LOVE it.  When I got the p226 I bought the "Classic 22" and then a 9mm "Centerfire Conversion Kit".  Works out that for the price a new p226 in 9mm I got both (basically a "free" .22 conversion is the way I looked at it).

Ruger mk II is my "other" suggestion
