Looking to eventually get my rating with one of the TN-based chapters. While surfing Amazon earlier, I happened across some weighted bars. They offer several weights, including a 10 lbs version. The dimensions of this offering is 47 x 2.17 x 2.17 inches. Will this sort of option suffice in lieu of the additional 10 pounds to the pack in situations where carrying a long gun is not permitted? Thanks! |

I've considered doing something similar myself and my assumption was it would be kosher. I never ran it by @Ben to confirm, though. That said, having had the opportunity to carry a pack and rifle quite a few miles since then, I'd rather have the weight in the pack. Carrying a rifle is a PITA. |

I also like to carry it as I think from a practical training standpoint it's more real. It was also handy on one particular hike as a walking stick. We crossed so many ice flows I actually wished I had the bayonet to use as an ice axe. We had to jog a lot on that one in any dry areas to make the time limit. |

I don't in principal have an issue with this if it is because you are somewhere you cannot legally carry a rifle. Alternatively, I also have no problem with you carrying a chainsaw instead as well. I think rifles should be carried whenever possible in keeping with the martial spirit of APC, but chainsaws as a tool of APCs trade also seems appropriate. |

I have been known to carry a heavy folding chair on a sling on hikes. Weight is one thing, keeping something unwieldy on a sling out front is another. A 10 lb rod, depending on length and how the sling is hooked up would work too, but it does nothing a heavy camp chair won't, and you can sit on the chair. |
