One of my YOUNG BROKE coworkers wants an affordable dependable 1911 to purchase in around ATL. Not cheap, but nothing fancy either.
Anybody got any ideas. I was thinking Springfield or Colt, but do not know where to send him. Thanks for your help! ETA: Corrected for $$ reality. |

I have 5 all by different makers. Oddly enough my carry 1911 is a Taurus. I have over 3k rounds thru it and not one malfunction I could blame on the weapon. It eats everything I put in it. I did replace the safety (anti-ambi) to a normal one and give it a trigger job as I did the rest, but it hits the target just as well as my $2kEd Brown. I paid lil' over 500$ for it and I'm really happy with it. Just last weekend I went 98/100 on rapid fire steel @20yds just as fast as I could go. Best score I've had in a year.  It may be a low buck gun, but it runs with the top dogs on accuracy in this house IMHO. Who'da thunk?  Two years ago, not me. Proof was in the puddin, it works and works well.00bullitt! Where are you seeing an STI for $500ish? That would be a great find for me.  |

I'd probably recommend the Rock Island Armory for the truly broke, although I do have to question their brokeness if you're thinking about a colt for them. RIA's can be had for less than $400 and if you find a really good deal occasionally a used one can be picked up for around $300.
For a step up I can reccomend the Taurus 1911. It's already got a lot of add-ons and till the end of the year they are offering a $75 Mail in Rebate on their 1911's. That is an unheard of rebate. http://www.taurususa.com/2008rebate/index.htm |

When I did this (buying an inexpensive 1911) I went with a Springfield Milspec with the intention of changing some parts later. Yeah, I spent more money in the long run and had some headaches going that route. Allen_PSI finally fixed some of the modifications I had done by a local gunsmith. Man that guy was a total hack job. Allen spent a lot of time fixing the crap this guy did to my pistol.
In the end I got a nice pistol out of the deal but I would have saved time and money and headache buying a Springfield Loaded instead. I still think a Milspec isn't a bad way to go. Are all the STI guns bar stock? |
