The M1 Garand would be nice, too...

I just traded my Ruger M77 to Joe's Sporting Goods.

It was like new, and I'm guessing they have it (and others) marked around $300.00 or so.

For what you want to spend, I'd be looking at used rifles.

I have a savage model 111.  works good, came from the factory with some bushnell $40 scope on it, but it works great.

I vote for the Savage.

Gander Mountain has LOTS of new bolt actions in 30-06 from Win, Rem, Savage, and others.

(I know there is a Savage in 30-06 with Bushnell 3-9x40 scope for right around $500)

I have a CMP M1 Garand that I put a new stock on and sling. Its a work of art...but it does get fired.

The M1 doesn't kick nearly as bad as a bolt action will, but, you can get 147gr JHP that are very kind.

If you handload, 45gr of IMR 4895 and 168gr Sierra Matchking will not be too tough and has been very accurate in factory Savage and Rem barrels for hunters.

My grandfather (rest his soul) took over 30 deer during his life with his Mausers in both 8mm and 30-06. Never had to fire more than one round to kill the deer. (North Dakota)

If you want a good, cheap, reliable 30cal rifle for hunting and plinking, get a Marlin 30-30 and put a scope on it. Their $225 at Walmart and work pretty damn well.

My Dad has taken over 20 deer with his 30-30...

with whatever choice you go with, practice practice practice....

Well, could you narrow it down a bit?  What are you looking for?  Bolt, semi, pump, 30-06 only?  Where will you be using the rifle?  Are you going to scope it?  What is the longest shot you would be taking with it?

Once we know these things, then it would be much easier to point you in the right direction.

Bolt action, yes I plan to scope it.  I'm not quite sure what the longest shot I would be taking would be, but I would have to say 350 yard max.  I have my heart set on 30.06 so yes that would be the only one.  Thanks in advance.

Are Mossberg rifles anygood?  Anyone know?
3/4/2005 7:40:47 PM EDT
[#15]
MOSSBERG rifles in the past have been considered mostly in very high recognition for their long-standing quality and reliability. As for the more modern designs, I really haven't heard anything either positive or negitive since I've never replaced my older rifle and shotgun.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
