So after Christmas I am going to have 3 options on firearms purchase.

1. Buy a Springfield XD 45 as a conceal and carry weapon.

2. F&N 5.7 Pistol

3. Build another AR-15

I currently have a mossberg 500, an ar-15 and a rock island 1911

Thoughts!

E.T.A

My budget really is $1000 bucks, I just have read really good things
about the xd and I can get a crossbreed supertuck for it at a pretty
good price. My theory behind getting another 45 is to stream line the
types of ammo I need to get. I want to get a super reliable gun for my
ccw and then keep the 1911 as a backup gun and to have at home as a
back up to my shotgun for home defence. I am not a big fan of the glock
grip, it is very uncomfortable for me but I hear they make a SF model
which might be more up my alley. I am open to any suggestions but those
three options where what I was considering most.

I'll take a shot at the "Scrap the FN". I really do not think that this cartridge is going to have a long life. Bet it all goes away in a few more years, by 2015 finding ammo is going to be hard to do.

BTW I did not see a CCW in your list. Sounds like you are due to purchase an XD 45..

Yeah the 1911 could be used as a ccw but I think the XD 45 would be a much better choice.

i disagree, peopele said the same thing about the .223 AR-15 many years ago.  And for pistol calibers, look at the .40, NO ONE thought that was going to catch on, low and behold it is one of the most popular calibers now.

i also really like the caliber, it is the perfect mix between a rifle and handgun round.  The PS90's only failure that will lead to it's demise is COST, but this is america, SOMEONE will build a cheaper rifle with the 5.7 platform and hopefully make it cheaper and it will catch on.

Well if the 1911 you have is reliable, as in no malfs in a 1000 rounds or so it can work as your CCW just as good as the XD. If $600 is you budget I would get a great CCW leather setup. A good belt and a top of the line holster mag pouch setup for yourself.

Now since that wasn't one of your options I would go with the XD because I think they are a good gun.,

The XD, unless he goes with a sub compact, is going to be hard to conceal than a 5" 1911. The 1911 is thin, and long while the XD is fat.

Agreed....XD is a nice gun, but much fatter than a 1911.

For the record, I LOVE my FN 57! I CCW it from time to time when wearing heavier clothing. The gun is larger, but super lightweight, very accurate, and no recoil. It has been very reliable for me and I would trust it and feel I could land 3-4 body/head shots in a CCW situation faster than I could get 2 hits with either my Glock 17 or .45 subcompact. I wouldn't trade mine for any 1911, regardless who thinks it blasphemy.

I have a XD40SC and carry it everywhere, and with the extended mag has a full size grip.

I have the same gun. Never tried to CCW it as I don't have one but the holster I have for it and the gun are awfully fat. The length on CCW guns doesn't bother me as much as the width. I like a certain type of dress. And the thinner the gun the better. I had a cheap walmart belt and a Milt Sparks VMII and with that my Govt 1911 disappeared under a t-shirt or other shirt.

I would go with the XD 45 if that is what you want.  I like a 45 and the xd so sounds like a deadly combo.

I have an XDm9 and the Crossbreed Supertuck. It's comfy as hell, even on long car rides and such. I would recommend the XD.

Scrap the FN 5.7.

1) Obscure ammo.  Not readily available, somewhat expensive.

2) Highly over-rated.  Yes, there is that one round that penetrates body armor, but you cannot buy it.  Besides the AP round, it's performance is questionable

Yup. Get a Compact XD45 (there is no subcompact XD in 45 ACP). Yes, it is thicker than a 1911. But with a good holster like CTAC (make sure it works) or MTAC, you can carry it concealed pretty well. I rotate my carry piece between a G19 and XD45 Compact using an MTAC for Glock and CTAC for XD45. Both are concealed well enough. Make sure you use a strong belt.

Go with 5.7 , I have one, have to shoot it it to believe how awesome this gun is to handle. The xd? Everytime I am at a gunshow folks are walking around trying to sell theirs, should tell you something. :)

To the O.P.

You mentioned an XD in .45 for CCW? Do you have a CCW handgun with a good holster?

If you don't, I believe ever person should have a good concealable handgun with a good holster for CCW and a good belt.

I only have a 1911,  I was going to use the xd .45 for ccw with a crossbreed holster.

But like I said I am open to ideas.

The XD will do you good for CCW.

While the AR and the 5.7 are harder to conceal.....

Don't forget a good, stiff belt as a part of your budget. A cheap belt will pull apart with the additional weight, even IWB.

I like Crossbreed, Milt Sparks, and especially Comp-tac M-Tac holsters.

I am a firm believer of CCW. Use the money for a CCW license and the rest of the money on a good handgun of your choice and liking with a good holster and stiff belt.

I am sure you know this, but I just have to say it again. Handguns are very portable and allow you to be armed where ever you may go or travel.

I'd like to see SOMEONE (Glock?) come out with a 5.7 in a more conventional layout. The FN makes a Glock look as nice as a custom 1911, it's plain FUGLY!

I want my Glock 57 with a threaded barrel (1/2x28 please). Then and only then would I consider selling my 57 pistol. I feel as confident in it as I do my Glock 17 for most any situation, but comparing sound!

I love the crap out of my FN 57.. if you want something super easy to shoot, its pretty damn sweet... It is a lil big to CCW regularly in my opnion (I ccw a 4"1911). I wouldnt be concerened with the ammo getting harder to find either. I think there will be enough firearms sold to keep the demand up, especially with the AR5.7...

But of course u should have all the listed..

So I keep hearing get a CCW gun that feels bet in your hand.  So I went to powder horn in columbia, target masters and bass pro.  I held a glock 30 sf, kimber ultra carry 2, xd 45 compact, colt night defender and a taurus millinum pro.  Probably spelt some of those wrong.  I must say the kimber the colt and the taurus felt the best in my hand.  I do believe one of those are going to be my choice.

It is at the lake of the woods exit.  Going east on i-70  take the lake of the woods exit, then take a right, go thru the first light and it will be in a little "strip mall" from the 70's lol on your left hand side.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and offer some advice that you didn't ask for in the form of a 4th option.  Spend the money on reloading gear and practice a LOT with your 1911 and then CCW it.

A Lee Pro1000 .45ACP reloading press is $159 retail from MidwayUSA, powder is ~$20/lb, primers are ~$30/K, ~$60-100 for 1K bullets (lead is perfectly fine for practice in a 1911), and the fired cases you should have been saving up all along.

For WELL under your spending ceiling you'll be able to produce enough ammo to truly become proficient with that 1911 and there is absolutely no reason at all why your CCW piece cannot also be your bedstand gun.

Remember what a wise old fart once said, "Don't be worried about the guy with the fancy, shiny pistol.  Worry about the guy with the pistol whose finish is well-worn.  He probably knows how to use that pistol."

But if I gotta pick a new gun for you to buy and CCW, the Glock 19 is darned hard to beat for lots of firepower in a small package.
