I'm down after having neck surgery,so have alot of time to think about things to do.I live in the NW side of Houston.I was wondering if anyone that has a machine shop would be willing to have kind of an open house to do the machine work on 80% lowers? As I understand it,you may do the work yourself to a cast lower that needs finishing. We would need to purchase lower castings from somewhere, and find out what all it entails to finish machine one completely.I think we will need to rent a lower jig,and of coarse have someone with the knowledge to VERBALLY explain what we need to do for a finished product.Maybe make it a bar-b-que sunday, everyone pitch in to the shop owner something for his trouble, and the use of his equipment.Anyone have any thoughts along this line?Would sure like to build one completely on my own,for more reasons than one. Thanks Wayne

sounds like a great idea.

I know of a person with a small CNC machine, I can see if he's interested.

I just got a reply back from him, He might be interested in doing it if we can get the details hammered out for him.

He needs to know what all parts do we need to machine/drill. And whether all of ours are going to be the same.

So we need to all order the same 80% lowers and chip in on a rig. I dont see alot of interest in this, so please reply if your interested in taking part in this.

A CNC machine probably isn't going to be that helpful to anyone with an 80% lower.  You need to finish them with a hand operated mill unless you want to take the time to enter the coordinates to machine yourself, but that's not something a non-experienced person would have an easy time doing.

Where a CNC machine would be useful is starting from a piece of metal stock.  Check out www.cncgunsmithing.com.  He also sells the jigs to complete 80% lowers for $89.99.

Also check out Roderus Custom Gunworks at www.roderuscustom.tzo.com  They have plenty of info and what not in their forums.  They have plans as well.  I just purchased Frank's DVD on machining an AR-15 lower from a casting and it was great.

Looks like the jig is only 119 from that site. I wonder what the receivers are going to cost (~120).

I will email him the pages to see what he recommands for building this with.
