So I get back from setting my junk up at the gunshow and its "hot" in the house. I call the wonderful place that did the gold plated repairs to let them know. Guess what? Its 1745 on a Friday and still 105 degrees. I had to leave a message with the message service. So a tech actually calls me about an hour later, asks me what the problem is and says he's on his way. Opens up my outside unit and theres not much freon and a leak somewhere. He cant find the leak, so he fills my system, and says that should hold me until they can get back out on monday or tuesday to fix it right No additional charge. Geez this sucks.

If there is a leak, there is a possibility that compressor oil has been blown out.
If you see any oil mist on any part around the compressor, the lines, the schrader valves (where the gauges are hooked up), etc,
there is your leak.

So he filled you with freon for a quick fix vs. using nitrogen to find the leak?

Sounds like some

There was oil EVERYWHERE. The fan had even been blowing it around. He used a sniffer, and a dish soap and water spray and still couldnt find the leak. Never could get the head pressure up very high either.

He mentioned that, but said that he'd have to remove my freon, fill with the nitrogen, remove the nitrogen, pull a vacuum on the system for 30 minutes then put my freon back in. Too long on a friday night with 2 more calls to do.

30 min for a vacume? I thought it was supposed to be no less then an hour for that? Now that I notice your time hack, pumping down a system and doing the nitrogen test would take a while

The leak is probably in your condenser coil.

I gotta crawl in my attic soon and check my own coil... Not looking forward to that

You'd be checking your evaporator coil in your attic I think.
If you're going to work in the HVAC trade, get used to dark and very hot attics.
You will see a lot of them.

The heat and air guy I use is really quite good...can fix a heat pump just by looking at it...

He graduated high school about 3 years ahead of me..and has probably been fixing heat and air systems for over 20 years.
