Buy a Saiga and convert it yourself.

They are AKs.

WASRs work and are cheap.

Arsenals also work and are slightly more expensive.

Remember they build AKs in caves banging rocks together to form the rivets....

Tosser speaks the truth. That said, I ordered an SGL20 from KVAR, had it sent to a smith in PA. He cut off the bayolug, and perm'd the brake. Voila! Jersey legal russian AK. I suggest that route. Or find a rickety ole SAR-1, it will work just as well, but not look as good doing it

Best bang for the buck is probably a Saiga or a MAK-90. MAK-90 will be slight more expensive and harder to find but is much simpler to convert to traditional pistol grip configuration.

WASR's are cheap and ugly but generally work just fine. If you decide to go with a WASR I would recommend only buying one you can inspect in person to check for the most common issue with them: canted sights.

They all work just the same. It really comes down to cosmetics.

I have the WASR and the Arsenal, both built like tanks !!
Arsenal is defintly better made, not stamped sheet metal like the WASR.
Arsenal makes a milled solid receiver
You get what you pay for, like anything else, but both get the job done
Rocks and rivets LMAO

Go with the Arsenal.  Expensive, but you will not regret it.

Not all Arsenals are Milled. They make just as much milled models as stamped. Either way both are incredible. I used to have a milled Arsenal that i sold for my Browning 1919 and even though i love my Browning, i still regret selling my Arsenal.

a somewhat timely and somewhat applicable response from mr. suarez can be found here.

ETA: i say 'somewhat' because i'm sure someone will say, 'but, that's not legal in NJ', etc. etc. etc.

A follow up question being: Has anyone actually seen any of these rifles at a NJ dealer?

Chances of finding anything other than a WASR or Saiga at an NJ dealer are pretty small, especially for a good price. If you want to buy one locally you'd probably have much better luck at a PA dealer or gun show.

I would not expect much more. It would be fun to actually handle a WASR in person, out of curiosity mind you.

I have been thinking of a Saiga 5.45 lately but understand that they are the most rare out of all Saiga models.

Theres an IO built AK at Cheyenne Outfitters, seems to be a nice build, but ugly furniture. If your close, its well worth a look!

I've seen those IO builds before and they're usually around $500, which is overpriced for what it is IMO (especially considering the god awful furniture it comes with )

You should be able to easily find a used MAK-90 for $500, which is an exceedingly higher quality AK.

This reminds me, i need a 74. All this 5.45 ammo i have no rifle to shoot it out of.

I agree the price is crazy.   They told me oh this is the last one we have... And then I saw the 5-6 piled in the corner...
