With so many to choose from, can someone give a run down on the basics? What tip is good for what application?  FMJ, HP, Ballistic Tip, Frangible, Soft Point?

you left out baby seekers and cop killers.

and the Law enforcement only pooch punchers.

all joking aside,

FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) is designed for penetration. Also a good target shooting round, often the cheapest.

HP (Hollow Point) or JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) is designed for expansion once inside your target, creating more damage and energy transfer to the target. Good self defense round. Often more expensive than FMJ

Frangible is ammo designed to disintegrate upon impact nearly eliminating ricochet potential. Usually non-lead non-toxic and is good for ranges where you may be restricted to non-lead ammo. Generally more expensive than the aforementioned ammo types.

Ballistic Tip is good for spending lots of money. Supposed to be the best of both FMJ aerodynamics and JHP expansion. I remain skeptical. Interesting little read.

Jacketed Soft Point Ammo (JSP) is another ammo designed for expansion like JHP although a bit slower in the rate of expansion. Could be used in firearms that have trouble in feeding hollow points. Generally cheap. I have read of people having feed issues with soft point ammo in AR15s.

Try going to the AR-15 community, equipment section, ammunition forum.  There is a whole bunch of helpful information there.

What he said!

Read the ammo oracle... And know that some .556 FMJ ammo (xm193) is not designed for penetration... but is designed for fragmentation... read the oracle it is all there!
