I saw an Otis Cleaning kit at the BX. It's the Otis Tactical Cleaning System which cleans every caliber from .17 to .50 handguns, .17 to .50 caliber, shotguns 410 to 12/10 gauge, and all in-line muzzleloaders. I can use this for the Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 917v as well. However, is this an ideal cleaning kit or please point me in the right direction. I also saw something like this. Ideal? |
mil cleaning kit They sell them at the BX or Clothing sales btw. |

As stated, the Otis system really works. If you get a kit you'll get a bunch of stuff you don't use though. Lots of ppl don't know that you can just purchase the items you need and save a bundle. Resupply & Accessories Above link is from the Military Cleaning Systems & Resupply link shows you the individual components you need. stuff you'll need - flexi-rod (get the legnth you need) - slotted tip (for the caliber you'll use) - t-handle (attaches to the flexi-rod for pull through chamber to muzzle) - bore brush - patches Once you figure out how to use the otis patches, you can use any patch and make the slits so that you can reuse patches / use patches more than once with the otis flexi rod + slotted tip. But the otis patches are nice because they have the slits in them. I use their patches for pistols and rifles. The thicker panoply is great for .45ACP bores. As stated, the USGI kit is great because of the segmented cleaning rod which can come in handy at the range if you get a fouled bore. You also need a m16 brush and m16 chamber brush from that kit. Attaching the chamber brush to a usgi cleaning rod segment give you lots of leverage for rotating the brush in the chamber for getting the crude out. |
I went to both and didn't see the kit. |

Don't forget, you can use a stripper clip and patch to scrape out the carrier, and the brass insert from the clip scrapes off the bolt tail. I use Otis on everything but my Flintlocks, and keep rods for pushing chamber brushes, and for emergencies like the stuck case I've never had. I know I'll have one as soon as I forget a rod though. |
