I have an AR upper, 100% complete.  I bought this in 1998.  The end of the barrel was not threaded-no muzzle device/compensator/etc.

Assuming that I could find somebody in CA to do this, could I get this barrel threaded and then add a compensator, or would that violate some CA law?

I have not built a lower for it yet.

Thanks for any help.

Would not violate any law. You're gtg.
It's only the lower you need to worry about. Everything except the lower is just parts.

Thanks.

Now I just have to find somebody to do it.

Threaded barrels are allowed, as are un-threaded barrels.

Flash suppressors are allowed, as are muzzle brakes.

Just depends on the lowers.

Seems like you've been here awhile.  Know anybody who would thread the end of my barrel?  I've canvased a few places in Oceanside with zero luck.

Would it not be easier to buy a threaded barrel? Then you'll have a spare (or a 2nd AR project to finish)

It would be easier.  Let's just say these have sentimental value.
One more AR project and I'll probably end up divorced.

As was stated, rifle barrels may be threaded. No pistol barrel shall be threaded in Ca, per Ca DOJ rules.

In regards to threaded barrels + pistols...

CA state law only prohibits a threaded barrel on a semi-auto pistol that accepts detachable magazines. [PC 30515(a)(4)(A)]

Summary of threaded barrels + handguns:
Threaded barrel by itself (not installed on a firearm) = legal
Threaded barrel + bolt-action pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + lever-action pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + pump-action pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + revolver = legal
Threaded barrel + semi-auto pistol that uses detachable magazines = illegal [PC 30515(a)(4)(A)]
Threaded barrel + semi-auto pistol that uses a fixed 10 round or less magazine = legal
Threaded barrel + single-shot pistol = legal

Penal Code 30515
(a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, "assault weapon" also means any of the following:
(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning the bearer's hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

Thank you for the clarification Quiet Wolf!!

All I was sure of was, none of the pistols I have would be able to have a threaded barrel.
Great info, very good!!!

I would recommend sending it out to Adco.  Everyone that has used them has been happy...don't have to worry about possibly getting someone that doesn't know what they are doing messing it up.
