While considering the first question, a second was mentioned....

Is 7.62 and .308 or 5.56 and .223 "lumped together" on your FAC?  Or do they have to be separate?

Just looking for differentiation across issuing forces...

Sussex have them separate - I have a number of .223's, and had difficulty getting across  the need for more .223's, but adding a 5.56 was fine!!

ETA they even gave me an additional 5.56 ammo allowance on top of the .223...

On my ticket I have one entry as .223 REM (5.56x45)

The Met (West) want it grouped together.....more space for all the other calibres...

My FAC (West Mids) lists them together as .223/5.56, .308/7.62 .38sp/.357mag

For my ticket ( STAFFORDSHIRE ) I was  told that they would have to be listed separate by one FLO when I first had my ticket. Since then I applied for more slots and hence a revisit by a different FLO, who was more than happy to placed a variation for a dual calibre .38/.357.

I suppose it depends who you ask hinking.gif

I'll have to consider this dilemma next time I send my ticket in for I only have .223 and not 5.56. I'll ask to see if these can be lumped together, or better separate!

I have .308 &  7.62 separate which is necessary for 7.62x54R rifle. I can always use some of this authority if necessary.

What you have to bear in mind boys & girls is that many police FLO's/FEO's or whatever, be they police officers or civilian support staff, know absoloutely f#(* all about guns, ammuntion or the various shooting disciplines or interests to which they might apply....

So, to follow that, would you would agree that there is no overall oversight at government level to maintain uniformity and they can pretty much do as they please...

ETA: This is pretty much the point of this post and poll..

There is certainly a lot of local interpretation. however, if you feel wronged over a decision, believe or not the Home Office are actually quite helpful in guidance to the correct one. But, no, there is no oversight I am aware of, and things only get resolved if challenged, which most people are reluctant to do as the firearms legislation is a mess, with some elements now contained in non-firearms legislation (because it was administratively easier than amending the Act)...

Yes many years ago our lot said that .308 was the same as 7.62, until I showed them the error of their ways. Now they understand. They are quite happy to sanction both .308 (a cartridge) and 7.62 (a calibre) on your ticket so that you can go out and buy both. Likewise they are happy to just call it a "Rifle" instead of bolt action or straight pull or lever action, again so when you walk into a shop you can by anything that conforms to the definition of a section 1 rifle.

I remember buying  a 445 supermag and got it as a 44 as they are both the same calibre bullet (.429)

Like having a .22 CF (centre fire) on your ticket lets you buy .222, .223, .22/250 etc etc etc. Its nice having a switched on police FLO's/FEO's. Saves them time and money as well as you having a long wait.

However for first time FAC issue they want the holder  to specify the firearm by the cartridge it takes. On your first renewal once they have sussed you out you get the above treatment, as well as an open ticket if you care to ask for it.

The stupid thing on Plod's part is that when they ask you to differentiate between the two near identical calibres, is they end up letting you have twice the ammo
Not that I'm complaining

Would that indicate that you cannot buy .308 Winchester (edit for correctoion Nazis ) ammo (none NATO for all intents and purposes) over the counter?

Mine (Glos plod) just says .223 for both rifle & ammunition. I might ask for some 5.56 when I put for a variation next month. Anybody know the Glos policy on calibres as I'm thinking of a .308 (or should that be 7.62?) as well as .38 Spl / .357 gallery rifle.

Well the chap I generally deal with knows that 7.62 is .308, 5.56 is .223 etc, but see how you get on.
