Guys,

All of a sudden, I have this interest in optics. Never cared about it before...but now I'm thinking about it.

Which would you chose and why?

Yeah, it's a broad question. Yeah, it depends upon what your individual needs are...but c'mon, answer anyway.

lol there is going to be mixed replies. People are going to be 5050 and most likely will hear alot of Eotech sucks or Aimpoints suck etc etc. It really comes down to its looks and the kind of dot and frame you feel more comfortable looking at. A square or circle? Do you like a plain dot or a dot with a circle around it? There really is no "better". We arent comparing Leopold scopes vs NCstar scopes. Thats a given. IMHO Eotechs and AImpoints are equal quality wise. Im sure you will get some "get an ACOG" replies too lol.

Long story short, try to find some at a shop or gun show to look at or if anyone you know has one. Only way to see what you like better is to demo it i guess

+1 on what Thomas said. Heres a good example. when I started to look at optics i was thinking Aimpoint all the way. I priced them, shopped them and researched the hell out of them. I went to the Valley Forge show with the sole intent of buying one . I looked all over the show for the best deal I could find. My buddy and I were standing at one boothe and he picked up an Eotech and sais "Cool look at this one". I bought it on the spot and love the thing. I put a 4X FTS multiplier behind it and couldn't be happier with the whole set up.

Yeah i put a magnifier on mine too, a 3x though. I love the thing to death, especially the swivel to side mount

Here is some pics

Can't go wrong with either, although my vote goes for EOTech.

I like EOTech because I prefer the big rectangular viewing window, the red target reticule is like something from a computer game and seeing the reticule move around on the screen as you move your head is awesome (parallax free after about 15yards or so I recall).  But its just a matter of personal preference, trying them both is your best bet if possible!

After you get one, I recommend you also get a $15 POS red dot sight...try using this for 5 minutes...then put on your EOTech/Aimpoint...you will appreciate the quality so much more!

Does any body know whether it is legal to use an EOTech optic for hunting in NY?

Agreed. It's a matter of personal preference. I have them both on AR's and my M1A Scout.

Get to a range and ask to try one out from a fellow shooter. That's the only real way to decide for yourself.

+1, you'll get a lot of both (and some acog recommendations).  I've been debating the same question for a few months now (thankfully, don't have the funds, so there's no rush).  I was pretty much settled on the EOTech - a friend has one that I tried, and it's great.  The only thing holding me back is the availability of LaRue mounts for the Aimpoints and mags.  I've heard some bad things about the EOTech mounts (not sure how everyone elses experience has been), and EOTech is now building several models with integral risers, so there is zero option for an aftermarket mount.

ETA:  but I don't think you can go wrong with either.  They both look like quality optics.

Well, I have been to more than a couple carbine matchs, carbine classes and informal black rifle shoots over the last few years. I have seen more than one Eotech with dead batteries or faulty electronics elicit a few swear words from the owner. Better hope your BUIS is ready to go. I have yet to see an M series Aimpoint die. I can't tell you how many times I've had to wait for guys to fiddle with their Eotechs, pushing buttons to get the dot intensity "just right." I just roll my Aimpoint on, or leave it on. It is much simpler to operate. My next match, I think I'm going to have guys start with that battery optics OFF, just to be a prick

My main shooter wears an Aimpoint. My next favorite carbine has a 1.5X compact ACOG. This is also an outstanding optic. I have used both in classes and competition. When I know I have longer shooting opportunities in a match––-over 200 yards, I prefer the ACOG. The 4MOA dot gets big on 300+ yards targets. I would concede an advantage to the Eotech here.

Another compact ACOG point: if you have an A2 upper, these are the tits.

i love my acog... it's the 4x32 TA01NSN with the backup iron sights.

i still entertain the the idea of an aimpoint or eotech for one of my other rifles but i never ever ever ever regret the acog purchase.

the biggest problem is the quality of the 'higher end' optics sort of spoils you a bit.

having used an eotech a few times, i do like them but one of the aimpoints would probably be my next purchase.

seems there's not much talk about them but Valdada Optics also has some really nice options in low-power CQB optics.

i can't imagine you'd be disappointed with either the eotech or the aimpoint.

My carbine runs a eotech 516 and I have no complaints with it, Just to add another optic to the mix burris intorduced a 3x scope at shot show and several companies are taking pre orders for spring shipment.  Price looks great compared to the 3 main optic players, Im gonna jump on one of these for my current build.

Like everyone else said, perfrence. They each have their place. Aimpoints have incredible battery life but on the down side it has a larger MOA which you'll only encounter at distance. I had the chance to use Mr. Fry's at a class and it was awesome! I did feel that my Eotech had a better FOV but you aren't blind using it or anything exaggerated like that. SP10 let me use his little ACOG, no idea what model but holy boobies! Wouldn't trade my Eotech 552.A65 for anything and will probably get both. My buddy and I use a pvs 14 with my 552 and it is incredible! I hear this is where people prefer an Eotech.  As for a mount for Eotech, I use a GG&G QD mount with perfect cowitness. No loss of zero either. I'm on my blackberry now but ill try and get pics up for the mount and reticle at distance. If you are close to me, feel free to beat the crap out of mine sometime.

All depends on your mounting, preferences, and operation.

1.   Mounting:  If you want to carry handle mount the optics, the best would be aimpoint.  If it's rail mounting on the receiver, Eotech - merely my opinion.

2.  Preferences:  Which sights do you like best?  Go with the modern look or the traditional look...

3.  Operation:  If you are planning on wiping it out maybe once a week at the range, then any battery operating optics is great.  However, batteries don't come easy in the sandbox.  Especially, the N batteries for 511a65 Eotech.

I own 3 Trijicon ACOG (TA-44-2, TA-44-3, TA-31RCO), 3 Eotechs (511a65, 3x mag scope, 556), and 1 Aimpoint.  I must say, I enjoy using the Trijicon TA-44 the best.  It work closely like a red dot (chevron or dot, red or yellow), and it doesn't require batteries.  They said 511a65 doesn't operate with NVGs, but I tried it with my PVS-14, and it work allright.  Even all Trijicon can be view under NVGs.

As for warranty, Trijicon is by far the best company I've dealt with as to warranties.  No questions asked, and replacement within 3 weeks.  Believe it or not, even aimpoint beats Eotech when it comes to getting things replaced or repaired.

P.S.  All three companies offers military/leo discounts.

If you start to lean towards Eotech, make sure you choose the "AA" versions. The "N " batteries don't last long at all, I think I was getting 8hrs but lithium AA batteries have been running strong for me. Eotech says 600-1000 hours runtime, not sure what time frame I am at but it's quite a bit.

I don't see why it wouldn't be... they don't project any light towards the animal (lights/lasers are illegal while hunting)

I like my EOTech; the large ring guides your eye to the aiming dot (especially useful in bright environments when you have the brightness too low).  The mount is built-in and perfectly sized for the AR.  However, it would be abnormally tall on most other weapons.

Aimpoints are nice, but they're just a rugged dot in a tube with longer-than-average battery life.  They also require a separate mount purchase (~$100 for a good one).  It should also be noted that the "X years of battery life" claim is at minimum brightness.  Most people turn their sights up to where they can see them in the daytime.

Incorrect. My  Comp ML3 's battery life is 50,000 hours based on a setting of 7 out of 10. this is bright enough Battery life on the aimpoints are not just "better than average" they are far superior than that of the eotech.
