I have a CCW permit issued by my resident state of Mississippi, which is reciprocal with Alabama.  While reading through Alabama's criminal code (13A-11-52) I noticed that it states, "Except as otherwise provided in this article, no person shall carry a
pistol about his person on premises not his own or under his control".  I assume that "Except as otherwise provided in this article..." is referring to a CCW permit allowing carry in places such as grocery stores, Wal-Mart, etc. as long as it is not specifically prohibited?

Prohibited places are government offices and airports past the screening area.  Everywhere else is good to go.  Signs at businesses have no weight but they can still ask you to leave.

"Except as otherwise provided in this article...."  The CCW provision is in that article and acts as an exception to ยง 13A-11-52.
