I'm planning a trip to Anchorage in August with the spousal unit. One of the events I want to schedule is an air tour, 2-3 hours. I want to give her memories that will last a lifetime.
I've been looking at the websites of Rust's and K2. I've seen tours that land on glaciers, and floatplane tours that land on scenic lakes. Living in a tourist town (Charleston, SC), one thing I've learned is "Ask the natives." Do any of you guys have recommendations for this? |

I've had quite a few former coworkers (I'm a travel nurse) that have done the Denali flight tour with K2 on separate occasions. Everyone had nothing but good to say about it and they loved every minute of it.
I have yet to do one of those tours in the 3 years I've been here....make it even more sad....I know a K2 pilot. |

| hey man, come stop in to Kodiak and stay in my b&b, Ill give you a great deal. you can go fly on andrews air (the folks who flew the guy that got eaten by bears.) IMO you should take a sea plane. We can see brown bears, fish, shoot shit up, etc. or if you want me to just leave you alone, even better. I commute by small single engine planes monthly to small native indian villages and I can tell you Kodiak has huge mountains that are so green your eyes will hurt. Whatever you choose to do, you will have a great time. |

Off-airport landings are an incredible experience, is your "unit" adventuresome enough for it? Talkeetna is worth spending some time in anyway, lots of tourist trap type shops, good fishing on the river. I could possibly meet you and take you for a boat ride up in the canyon depending on your timing. Kodiak is way cool, float planes are awesome. K2 is a top notch outfit. Rooms at theTalketna Alaska Lodge are pretty nice. Its about a 2 hour drive north of anchorage. How long are you two staying? Are you into whitewater rafting? The Talkeetna has the longest linked stretch of continuous class 4 whitewater in north america... 14 miles if memory serves me right. |

He's the only guy I've stayed in touch with from high school, and we usually have a period of years in between actual visits with eachother. Kind of ironic that my best friend and I are thousands of miles apart, but the 'net helps us stay in touch. |

Plan a couple of days to get out of town. The drive down to the Kenai Peninsula is one of the most beautiful drives in the country and there are tons of stops and photo ops along the way. The drive from Eagle River to North Kenai will take about 4 hours, but allow a couple of extra hours for sight seeing along the way. If you're set on just a flight seeing trip, the Katmai Bear trip is best, but I would do a fly out fishing trip instead to the Kustatan or Big River Lakes. It costs about the same as a view trip, but you get to fish for a few hours and still see plenty on the flight. Call and see if Doug is available. Tell them that you want to go fishing, let him know the dates you will be there and tell him that you would like to see bears and glaciers on the flight in/out. They can hook you up.

Thanks for all the input. Makes me wish I had a month and PowerBall winnings to spend up there.
I was in AK a couple years ago and loved it (in the middle of summer I'll plan on coming back to this forum for an AAR afterward. Again, thanks.
