Just a thread to introduce yourselves and state where you are, etc.

If enough people respond I'll tack the thread and we can use it for reference later.  You never know, you might have a future shooting buddy near you and not even know it...

I'm Jim.  I live in Anchorage and I am a glazier specializing in automatic door install and repair.  I'm 30, divorced, and father to a 9 year old boy.  I've met two other Alaskan members so far and would like to meet more if I can.  If you want to go shooting or just meet for coffee, just let me know and I can try to schedule something.

For some reason they made me moderator for the Alaskan board.  I hope that doesn't count as too many points against me - hehe.

The Cat man here.  My name is Ray, I'm in Palmer and work for the local Phone company as an outside plant maintenance tech.  I just turned 51, married with 2 children and 2 stepchildren, all grown with kids of their own.  6 grandchildren total.  I would love to go shooting, but we're trying to get our house ready to move in, so you can imagine where my spare time goes.  The Alaska dream, build a house out of your pocket and work on it for the rest of your life.  We spend alot of time at Lowes and Home Depot, so we could hook up for coffee.  I'll let you know when we head for Anchorage.  And there are no points deducted for being moderator.

Waiting for my first Bushmaster AR 15 here in Valdez, I have lived here for 5 years now and like it very much although the amount of snow on the ground come May kinda sucks. I am Operations Manager for a Tug Company that escorts/docks tankers in PWS. I have been active on another polymer handgun forum for several years and now with the new addition to the family I am learning from this forum. Don't get to the "Big City" too often, but when I do I certainly would like to get together.

Hello

It is good to see others from Alaska! It looks as if we have people from all over the State.  I am living in a small village (Atqasuk)on the North Slope.

I have been working and living up her for the last four years as a police officer.  This is a little differance then working in on the road system.

Although I have several AR-15's, I did just pick up a Danish CMP M1 Garand, money well spent!!

I do not often make it off Slope, but we will all have to get togother for some shooting.

Stay Safe.

I am Mike -37, live in Wasilla, work out of town, lived all over the state.

I work in mining, sometimes as a metallurgist, two weeks on/two off in theory.

I am into metalworking, garage gunsmithing, C & R collector.

I like to shoot highpower with an AR, formerly with an M1A.  It seems I am *always* gone on matchday, but I do enjoy shooting with an AR or single shot .22.

I am trying to whip my unfinished basement into shape, but lack the time to do it.  Give me new construction anyday.

Coffee or an afternoon at the range sounds good.  I have been at work, drills, training, or family obligations for most of the past 6 months, so I haven't been out much.  It doesn't hurt to ask, though.

Edited to update since the last couple of years.

Mike Simmons, 36, out of Fairbanks here.  I'm an electronics technician who works remote USAF radar stations scattered around Alaska, for extended periods of time.  I'm currently working at Barter Island (North Slope, near Canadian border). I used to be a C3 dealer for about 9 years but gave it up.  I amounted an obscene collection of firearms but only get to play with them when I am in town.  If I am in town, and weather permits, you can catch me down at the borough range on Cushman pretty much every single day (literally), usually from 12 to 4pm.

I'm also a member of AMGA (Alaska Machine Gun Association) and try to make the big shoots (Anderson and Whittier).  Please come by and check out the AMGA at any of the shoots - you don't need to bring anything and normally given the opportunity to try some MG's.

Edited to update
I'm now 53, retired from working on USAF Radar.  Now I am a Facility Supervisor for the Fairbanks North Star Borough at Birch Hill.  I'm pretty much at the range every weekend day.  Once my mother passes I may be moving to my other home in Nevada.

Aw, come on now!  Only one other stout soul from Fairbanks?  Sure it's cold, but that doesn't stop us.  We have one of the greatest shooting ranges - it's maintained, NO RULES, NO RANGEMASTER, NO FEE'S, NO REGISTRATION...  Nice clean range where most everyone is respectful, and mindful.  Tannerite targets and machineguns are common.  Don't make me drive down to Anchorage, that's a long drive dang it!  I suppose I will have to this year as the one and only time I was able to go to the Anderson shoot, it was canceled due to fires and now I hear you guys are going to hold your own shoot down South instead?  Fine, but it better BE GOOD!!!

Hey All,,,,, Todd here in Haines and sometimes Juneau.  I was a memeber of AR15-L way back before this web based system.  Was in KC, Mo back then,, finally made it back to AK about 3 years ago after being gone for 18 years.  35 years old, single, part owner of Ice Communications, Inc,, Wireless Internet Service Provider.  Just got expanded into Juneau, and if all goes well,, will be all over SE, if not the whole state.  No AR yet,,, but SOON!!!!  Will be a BM 20" A3.  Glad to meet all of you

Welcome back to the form Todd.  You're not too far away from me but with no road you may as well be in WA state.  Drop me an e-mail some time when you're going to be in Juneau and we can get together for coffee or a trip to the Hank Harmon Range to shoot a few rounds.  Later this summer our new 7 lane indoor range opens here in Juneau.  Current date is July or August for the grand opening.  They have not however set any membership or visit fees.  ADF&G is building it as a hunter education project with some funds contributed by the City of Juneau.  I'm really hoping they are reasonable and I can pay an annual so I can go shoot indoor during the 5-6 months a year the weather really stinks here in Juneau.  Doubt they will allow .222, AR15's in the indoor range but ya never know.

Stay dry and be safe.

George of Juneau

Thanks George,, I should be in Juneau a lot this summer,, I hope anyway,, depends on how many people want our wireless.  I see you are a gci customer... that's the enemy!  J/K
Link Posted: 3/30/2003 4:55:44 PM EST
[#26]
I'd gladly drop GCI when the right company comes along and provides comparable service at a reasonable price.  Looking at the Ice site, the prices have to drop a lot before they'll be in the ball park of ACS and GCI.  With the hook to the network, per unit and monthly fees it gets expensive fast compared to my current service at about $60.00 a month.  Granted with wireless it would be much more useful around town but it's not something I currently have or miss.  How good is the Ice coverage around Juneau right now?   I live and work in Lemon Creek.  Last I heard it was only available in downtown!

George
Link Posted: 3/30/2003 5:04:27 PM EST
[#27]
Actually,, those prices aren't right anymore,, just haven't updated the page in a while.  We have 4 sites up... but not in Lemon Creek yet.. Lena Pt, KTOO downtown, The Rockdump, and Outer Pt. If you're close to the highway, we'll be able to reach you soon.. but if you're way back in there, we probably will never get there.  Just depends on what's in the way.  Seriously though,,,, if you don't need mobility, there isn't a huge reason to switch.  EXCEPT for the fact that a lot of people come to us because of the level of service we provide.  Simply, the best there is.
We got one customer because they called for DSL and they were told it would be a couple weeks at best.. they called us and we had them up and running two hours later.  But heck,, all this has nothing to do with guns!!!  Look forward to meeting you and blasting some rounds down range.

Todd

Whoa!  Let me get this straight - you are unemployed and NOW?!?! you are going to buy a new rifle?  Most people do it the other way around.  I like your moxy, Steve!

Hey, the valley sure is growing fast, ain't it?

The Valley is growing TOO fast.  I bought my house for 120K 3 years ago, and my real estate agent cousin said it would bring 165-170K right now.

The forest down the road is another high end subdivision.

Damn!  19 and unemployed. I swung a hammer for several summers.  It is good work if you are working for a good builder, a living hell if you are not.  :)  I take it you had a good summer!

AK_Mike, Lol, Thanks. Yeah I worked with my father over the summer doing carpentry work, + the dividend will be here soon, and in spring I'm going into Forestry.  Most of my family's been in, or is still in Forestry.
The Valley sure is growing rapidly, I remember when I used to know everyone in this town.  Now, I don't even know half the people!

BTW, I assume most of you here have now heard about CC being legal in AK, without the need for a permit (except for Anch)...  As well as the Marijuana law (again, except for Anch)?
Link Posted: 9/14/2003 11:50:56 PM EST
[Last Edit: AK_Mike] [#36]
Hey Hey!  No permits needed for CC, liberal pot law (if that's your bag), and a free state dividend large enough to buy one or two AR's a year just for living here?  Lot's of trigger time during the 24hr/day sunlight. Where else I ask you....

Edited to add, lowest tax rate in the union, no State tax or sales tax (at least in Fairbanks)

Hello my name is Paul I'm 36, fng, married, with two daughters in Anchorage. Originaly from LA/OC, CA area. Missed CA until I went back to visit, definetly here to stay. I manage a Publix Self Storage facility and try to think of ways to convince my wife that I need more rifles.

Welcome Paul!  When I was a dealer, I used to have my male customers to tell their wives that they are fair investments as firearms pretty much all go up in price over time.  If she doesn't have a gun, get her one.  Tell her the other guys up here tease you cause you don't have enough rifles.  Do a thread search and I am sure it will turn up some good threads concerning the wife/gun issue, including ways to elude wife gun control and detection.

By the way, I have noticed in Fairbanks they can't seem to build enough public storage facilities, they are great money makers here.  I myself have no home, just a bunch of storage units...  I am sure soldiers are a large part of the clientele, they have to keep their stuff somewhere while they rotate through.

Easy.  Forget convincing her and just don't tell her .  She can't say no if you don't ask...  I'll just keep them at my house for you - or in my storage room for that matter...  That way you have a vested interest in letting me know when my payment is overdue .  (Thanks again by the way)

:) Too funny. Being elusive with a rifle is one thing. Being elusive with money is another. Still trying to think of alternate descriptions of all those nice gunsmithing tools that I am leaning towards purchasing. I think I will try installing a door knob with a receiver wrench, I'm not sure if she will fall for it though.

I didn't even consider the tools and accessories!  If you can't fool her, tell her the truth - you got the tools cause you wanted to save some money rather than having to pay someone else to do the work.

Welcome.  The 6mmPPC sounds interesting.  Remember, the caribou need protection as well - someone's got to do it!  I was thinking about something like the Beowulf incase I ran across Mr. Bear.  Perhaps even the .458 SOCOM or 50AE.  Have you tried your Beowulf out on anything yet?

Haven't punched anything but paper and steel plates with the Beowolf. Got a nice large male wolf last week with one of my CLE built AR's in 223. May be just a fluke but had been using FMJ's on wolves with bad results so switched to 60 grain Berger and it worked like a champ. Don't know how it would of worked if I had hit bone.
