... receive this in email from the NRA today? I'm kind of hoping that it is just a block email sent out to all memebrs... ![]() 29 August 2008 Dear Member, Many thanks for the return of your certification request form. As you cannot be signed off by other means by us, you will need to attend one of our assessment days so that we can certify you. To this end, please see the attached booking form for details of the dates available. Please note that if you also shoot with a local (to you) NRA affiliated club then they can certify you instead of us. The fee for the assessment is £10, payable in advance, and will take approx 20-25 minutes. Payment can be made by cheque (Payable to the NRA), by credit card over the phone or online via the MoD certification section of our website, http://mod.nra.org.uk <http://mod.nra.org.uk> , due to be live shortly. If you need two slots ie rifle and black powder that use different ranges then the fee is £20. The assessment consists of the following parts: Questions to check your understanding of range safety protocols Loading, firing, unloading and check clear procedures Misfire procedure Emergency stop Zeroing Handling and accuracy Please ensure you bring all equipment, firearms and ammunition for all classes of firearm you wish to be assessed in. You cannot be assessed without it and the fee will be forfeit if the assessment cannot be completed as a result. Once you have been booked onto an assessment date a confirmation will be sent out, primarily by email so please make sure we have your correct address. Please note that we expect these days to fill up quickly and will put more on as required. However please send your form back as quickly as possible, regardless of the dates required, so that we can book you in. What is it you are being assessed for ? Or certificated for ? |
Yeah, this is the new thing where your club chairman has to "certify" you as to the kinds of firearm you are capable of firing safely Separate to the HME stuff, though HME rifle is one of the kinds you can be certified in.There is a special NRA card showing what types you are certified for, that you will have to have on you when shooting on MOD ranges and may be asked for by the Range Warden... MOD ranges includes Bisley, by the way. |

Haven't had that email but as it happens I stumbled across the letter from the NRA I got about 2 months ago which says pretty much the same thing. If you've shot an NRA comp at Bisley this year you're covered for that class of rifle if you fill the form in so you should be ok for a scoped rifle Dave. I'm hoping to get the HRA to cover the iron sighted rifle but I guess I'll have to arrange to do the gallery rifle thing for my 10/22. They also mention shotgun on the form so I don't know if that refers to psg type matches only but I suspect it covers clays at Bisley too as one of the layouts has it's danger areaoverlapping Perbright ranges on Stickledown. I suppose I'll have to decide if I'm going to shoot clays at Bisley or not. I haven't so far but keep thinking I should have a go at trap shooting there some time. Maybe we should organise an AR15 clay day there? |
Did all the paperwork months ago, detailing all SR/PR type shoots...... That's where my question sprang from.. |

I recieved our certificates 2 weeks ago ( there just a credit card size certificate with boxes to tick for different classes of firearm, and a slot for the Sec to sign they will easily fit in your wallet), and will be implementing ongoing assesments to our members who require them starting in October. We will only be issuing them for Scoped rifle, Ironsight rifle, and gallery rifle. Its just alot more work for a club sec as I have to keep auditable records of the assesments I implement ![]() ETA; ALL NRA qualified RCO's do not require one, hope I pass mine in Dec |
Just another point, serving military, and firearms trained police officers do not need to be certified under the NRA SSS as long as they are up to date with all relevant training. |
There's no written exam for the NRA SSS, its instruction implemented by your club(that must be NRA affiliated) You are not assesed by the disaplines you shoot, but by class of firearm, I have been doing alot of work over the last 6 weeks or so, on how to implement this in to our club and have now designed a regime that is imformative, relevent and auditable. If your RCO is expired you will need to do the SSS within a club or with the NRA. Individual NRA Members can do this at Bisley, however I do not now the in's and out's of this as I have not looked in to it. Its been enough doing the nessasery for our club. The firearms catagories that are assessd are, Telescopicsight rifle, iron sight rifle, long range pistol, short range pistol, Gallery rifle/carbine, muzzle loaded rifle, muzzle loaded pistol, Shotgun and HME firearms and ammunition, the latter can only be assessd by an NRA qualified RCO with the relevent training for HME weapons and ammunition. Hope this helps you a little bit

Separate to the HME stuff, though HME rifle is one of the kinds you can be certified in.
