I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place. I do alot of reading of these kind of topics, but I always enjoy reading new advice and opinions.

I'm looking at getting an ar15 to keep in my gun safe if S hits the fan.

I'm looking at used ones, because no store in my whole state has any ar15's in stock.

I want to know your guys' opinion on using an ar15 for SHTF.  I want a m4 style ar15 with a chrome lined barrel, but is a chrome lined barrel and absolute NEED? I'm faithful about keeping my guns cleaned and oiled.

Also, would a 20" A2 buttstock style ar15 (m16 type) be okay? I live in michigan, so you could say most of it is pretty rural.

What do you recommend for optics? I'm very stubborn when it comes to using electronics, so red dots are frowned upon for me (If SHTF and my optic runs out of battery or fails me, im F'd). I do like the traditional iron sights, but would you recommend maybe a 1-4x24 scope? If so, how would that work out for CQB?

1-4 scopes with a true 1x lower power work great in my opinion. I would also look at an ACOG

If you go 20", I would try to find a light weight barrel to keep the overall weight down.

As far as fixed stocks, I would rather have the slightly shorter A1 over the A2.  During non-SHTF, non-chromed isn't that big of a deal, but if times got bad, I would like the extra piece of mind of having the lined barrel and especially the chamber.

I'm a decently big guy, 250lbs at 6'1", so I'm not too terribly concerned about an extra pound. What I'm worried about is turning corners in CQB, but I guess our military has done that for years with the m16. My options are limited right now, and if I come accross an ar15 for sale that isn't chrome lined barrel, I will probably take it, then have a chrome lined barrel put on after the gun/parts buying craze has calmed a bit.

You need to better define what you mean by "SHTF."

To some it means "someone broke in to my house."  To others it means "the collapse of civilization, living off the land in small nomadic bands having to protect yourself from bandits."

In a combat rifle - chrome lining or some other form of anti-corrosion treatment should be considered a given.

You may be "big," but even little things have a tendency to feel mighty heavy after a few hours too long.  Take that into consideration.

My SHTF rifle.

Yes I think chrome lining is a must for a SHTF rifle. Thats just me. I also have a couple of accessories I think are a NEED while others just view them as optional. YMMV. I also bounce between having a vertical front grip and not. Its not pictured but its back on there again, I keep going back to it

I went with an ACOG so I could skip the bulk and weight of having a 1-4. I like it even more than I thought I would

as of lately, by SHTF I'm talking another american revolution. Freedom fighting.

Zombies;ehh...that's the least of my worries. My 10/22 with 25rd mags can take care of that.

I guess I can use a non-chrome lined barrel untill I can pick one up off the dead guy right?

I got a guy semi interested in selling his colt LE6920, and i also got a guy interested in selling his bushmaster HBAR 16" , should I risk it and wait for a response on the colt or take up the guy with the bushmaster? I'm worried about getting an ar15 before any kind of assault weapons ban sets in

I am 6'3" and around 250 and I can tell you if you are carrying it a lot, an extra pound makes a hell of a difference, but balance does make a difference too.

How much are they asking for the guns you have been looking at?

Have you looked at the used rifles people have for sale in the Equipment Exchange here?

--------
How much are they asking for the Colt and Bushmaster?  I personally would lean away from the HBAR barrel.

---I'm actually trading my 93 chevy truck for one. Both are interested, but the guy with the colt might be keeping it. Is it worth waiting and taking the risk for that colt? The bushmaster does have a chrome lined barrel too.

What is the value of your truck then?

--About $1800. Its not a show truck, but it runs and drives good. got a dings and scratches, but nothing major. I'm having a hell of a time selling it for cash, so I thought i'd just skip right to the point and see if I can find an even trade.

but anyway, I'm torn between the decision to risk and wait for a response on the colt, or take the bushmaster offer more seriously. Either way, i better not get my hopes up i guess

I would lean toward waiting on the colt if you think he will really do it.

Has it been too soon from your last contact with the colt guy to contact him again?
1/14/2013 3:08:53 PM EDT
[#17]
yes, I was contacting him a few hours ago. He's might be going to the dealership to buy a new truck this weekend, but if they low ball him on his trade in value for his car he won't buy a new one. So i guess that means he was implying that he would trade. He sounded pretty interested in a trade actually, but it was up to his wife lol.

With that said, and when (not if!) SHTF and i'm using an ar15, am I going to be wishing I had that Colt or won't it matter? The bushmaster does have the heavy barrel, so I guess that means it could withstand more fire and take more heat?
1/14/2013 4:47:49 PM EDT
[#18]
It will, but without full auto fire, it likely will not make much a difference.

Does the bushmaster have any extras or is it just pretty much a plain jain carbine

Napalm = styrofoam and gasoline
Flame throwere = Super Soaker loaded with napalm

I'm not aware of it being illegal unless it's somehow classified as a destructive device.
