| From what I have read in the NCGS, auto knives are not necessarily illegal. Carrying them concealed is specifically barred. My local PD, who I work for, has a policy of not carrying them at all, saying state law makes it illegal. Does anybody know of any part of the NCGS or a written opinion from the AG I can use to open up a discussion on the topic? |

14-269 Carrying concealed weapons.
section (d) (d) This section does not apply to an ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position. As used in this section, "ordinary pocket knife" means a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action. While it only addresses concealed carry it would "appear" that open carry of such isn't prohibited BUT it seems it'd be tough at best to carry one "openly" where it could be identified as such a knife. DO NOT take my words for anything important, but from what ive read/been told regarding auto knives in NC a pocket knife is NOT considered concealed if the pocket clip is visible on the outside of your clothing. That should make it legal to carry as it will be considered "open carry" under the law.
If anybody has any more legal knowledge I would be interested to hear as well. |

I cant remember the site I read it on, it was a site that listed all the NC knife laws, but basically said that the knife isn't considered concealed under the law if a pocket clip is visible. |
