So I'm about to smoke something for a while and I need some applewood.  Problem is, we're out of dried stuff.  Is it an option to go out and lop off a branch from my apple tree to use for smoking?  I'm going to be doing this on a gas grill, so the heat won't be coming from the branches and shouldn't be affected too much.

No idea how well or not-well that would work.

If you are in the Lynnwood area, I strongly suggest going down to Double D D Meats and picking up a bag of chips and perusing their incredible selection of marinades, hot sauces, BBQ sauce (assuming you aren't using it on beef), and seasonings.

I don't think you want to use green wood to BBQ, as it leaves a funny flavor in the meat.

Do you have to use apple wood?? Any safeway, qfc, albertsons, etc... Has mesquite (sp?) or Hickory chips for dirt cheap... I wouldn't use green wood either.  Don't forget to soak the chips in water for at least an hour...

+106.  You can use green wood in a firepit just fine, especially if you let it burn for a long time and get a nice hot bed of coals, but in a BBQ or smoker for some reason it retains a bitter kind of flavor.

If you are going for a slow low temperature smoke, like 120 degrees, then it probably won't work.
Not enough heat to get green wood to get smoking.

The former GI Joe's has a good selection of dried woods for smoking in the larger chunks (don't get the stuff that looks like sawdust)

Perfect!  Ok, didn't think they would carry that stuff.  I'll hit them up and get some apple wood dried and ready for next time :p

Lowes carries large bags of Mesquite chunks....pretty cheap too.

Joes carries a decent collection of various types of wood in chip form...I stocked up when they had it sale for under 2 bucks a bag.
