Who here is up to speed on the black powder laws in CT?
Can they currently be shipped directly to a residence?  Or is an FFL required?

They can be shipped right to you,  no need for an FFL

Yup, ship straight to you. No FFL needed

Haha!!!!
Didn't I tell you that the other day? Granted my confidence level wasn't really high, kinda just above guessing, but I got it right!

Only caveat is if you add a conversion cylinder, or have a cartridge conversion done to the frame it is treated as a normal pistol.

That's where I was not sure - conversion cylinder to modern powder and how that is handled

Ship em all over!

My plan is to keep it completely old school; nipples, ram rods, caps and balls

If you keep in "old school" no ffl needed. If you add a conversion cylinder, then an ffl.

Just for my knowledge(which I have no plans to do) but what if you buy a conversion cylinder later by itself?
Do you need an FFL to transfer the cylinder?

Nope, think of it as parts. No ffl needed. I wouldn't convert a brass frame, they will stretch, or an open top,( think colt dragoon). A remington 1858 copy would be your best bet for a conversion.

the biggest problem with the conversions, is the price. Adding another $200 to $300 the price of a $200 gun, to me is not worth it. There also were reported problems with the timing of these cyclinders, and added a trip to a competent gunsmith kept me from getting one. Plus the scarcity of percussion caps has kept me shooting flintlocks.

Yea personally I don't plan to convert it.  The thrill to me is once in a while shooting something completely different(black powder).

Anywhere locally where black powder is available?  Actual black powder, not pyrodex or any of the others.

Nothing locally.  Due to special storage requirements, no one carries it. I get it from Maine Powder House or Powderinc. For me, anything more than 10lbs is where hazmat charge becomes tolerable.

Gotcha, thanks for those names.
So in your opinion is shooting the real stuff that much better?
4/10/2016 9:10:29 PM EDT
[#16]
Because I shoot flintlocks, I can only use real black powder. The substitute stuff requires a hotter ignition source (percussion cap). When I shot percussion, I found the real stuff more consistant, and it smells a whole lot better after shooting than the substitutes.

That is awesome!  Even more so because you actually use it for hunting.

Bending, If you know anyone that heads up to the Kittery Trading Post,  they carry black powder. I was up there a few weeks back...I think it was $24.00 a pound or something like that.
