Some us were talking about a backpacking trip a while ago. Now that the weather is not freezing who's in? No location yet. I am itching to try my GHB and would not mind going somewhere that we JEEP into. Any Ideas? Gun friendly areas to do this? I'd like to do something fairly mild as I have not been backpacking in eons.

If this idea becomes reality I would be in.I have been wondering why we havent had any Ohio campouts.

I honestly don't know of many good backpacking destinations here in Ohio, we always went to WV or the UP when I was growing up.

I'd be interested.

Wildcat hallow has 5 and 15 mile trail and is national forest so you can camp anywhere.  (recommend carrying your water for the weekend there's lots of "relics of Industry" around.

Zelesky (sp) state forest is right next to Lake Hope state park out side of Nelsonville.  you have to camp in there campgrounds but have potable water along the way.  there lots of interesting stuff like the old Iron furnace, oil drilling sights,  little coal mines and homesteads to look at. along the way the trails are roads from when the area was farmed and were abandoned around  the depression. bonus the parking lot is very near the beach!

Zainesville has Ohio power recreation land but I havnt been there for years. I mostly just fished there. I dont think you can go offroading though. Richland Furnace would be a good place for camping and 4 wheeling. Wayne National is another but I dont think you can take any vehicles on the trails.

i know some stuff about hiking trips.

I was thinking wild cat, but next to the beach sounds good too. With a little notice and a great location I may be willing to go out of state. Come on Subnetmask, I know you want to do this.

I dont think we need to go out of state but we do need to get together some activities that are a must to do. Just out loud I like that ability to camp, 4 wheel and shoot in any area of the forest so long as it has a good backstop.

Would anyone be up for a trip down to Red River Gorge. No shooting or four wheeling but maybe more of a great trip to test the BOB and camping/survival skills. It is about a 2 hour drive from Cincinnati, and east of Lexington KY.Ohio AR15 members really need to get together for a campout,no matter where it is at.
4/2/2007 5:59:16 PM EDT
[#9]
I would like to do some mild 4 wheeling and shoot, but it's not mandatory.

Maybe camping trip with hiking would be a better description.

Sounds like my back yard.

Dont worry, wherever we go I'll pull you and your kayak with my quad if yours is still down for repair.

Quad's running, just drips a bit of coolant. I didn't find a kayak, the shitheel in Cincy sold it out from under me so I'm still on the lookout.

Zaleski state forest isn't a bad place to backpack except that it gets a bit crowded in good weather. If you go to Portsmouth, the Scioto trail is pretty cool, the first big hill is a killer, pack light!  Also if you can avoid the horseback sherrifs, the back parts of Ohio Power are pretty cool and remote.

 cheers,

  Mike

Might I suggest Ohio's largest State Park...

Shawnee State Park.

60+ thousand acres...some bad ass trails that, if the backpacker finds to technical are criss-crossed by paved roads and gravel fire roads.  Hiked a second time last year with less gear and it was a blast...again.

Both times I NEVER came across any other hikers though I did run into a couple vehicles using the roads.

I would be up for a trip to Shawnee.I have always wanted to get out there and backpack.I would like to do it before it gets to be above 80 though.I may go down to Red River Gorge for a solo two nighter this weekend. It is suposed to be a little cold at night, but I think it is perfect backpacking weather.

Perhaps this would be a good time for me to say I have not been hiking in ten years and have since taken up a new hobby of smoking a pack a day. Mild is the name of the game for me.

I'm in, but...

To me "backpacking" implies no vehicles (other than the drive to the trailhead), and a minimum 2-3 day jaunt into the wilderness. It also means not a whole lot of shooting, since nobody wants to carry THAT much ammo with them.

Come on dudes, I smoke a pack a day and I still went on 5 day trips in California's Sierra Nevada mountains (at 8000 feet, no less). Let's do it right.

Me filtering water (I only carry about 1.5 liters at most at any given time)

Taking a break:

Camp stove, and my "Thermarest Easy Chair" (gotta have that ):

That's a two man tent, if you really love each other. Which means Craig, Pete and Mr Softie would be FINE:

View from my second camp site of the trip:

My 5 day pack (including food and 1.5 liters of water) weighs 27 pounds. I wanna go far.

I have a feeling we're going to run into a problem where members don't have the gear to do an honest to God backpacking trip. Plus, they'll want to make it a shoot...

We COULD wheel it (yay Jeep!), then do day hikes I suppose.
4/5/2007 12:20:09 PM EDT
[#21]
Thats kind of what I was thinking. I'm not against some real packing, but I don't want to look like the out of shape smoker that I am either.
4/6/2007 7:41:19 PM EDT
[#22]
I definitely want to do this. I am working on getting some gear together so I can do backpacking trips like SubnetMask's pics. I did two weeks in the rockies once and it was amazing.

i like wilderness camping. no preset campsites you go untill you find a spot you like and thats where you camp.
there is no wilderness camping in ohio, there is some in pa and more in that place up north.

Hocking Hills or Shawnee are nice places for hiking.  However, my best SHTF hike was on the Appalacian Trial!
