+1

Hunter 440 is a VERY nice pellete gun. Shadow 1000 also seems to be nice, though I have only held it. You can get both with a combo that comes with rings and a scope.

Why air gun? I saw new Ruger 10/22 asking for $160 at Gunbroker.com.

EDIT: Sorry, I did not see the keyword "backyard".  Gamo is suitable.

I would have to recommend the Gamo as well. I purchased the Gamo Shadow1000 at Wal-Mart for $124. Very accurate at pellet rifle distances. I had a gopher in the backyard garden and didn't want to use poisons for fear of contaminating tomatoes, zuchinni, etc. Felt like I was living the movie Caddy Shack for a bit until it finally poked it's head up enough to smoke him. Trigger takes a little to get used to. A lot of take up before it actually fires but it is consistant enough to use a long pull to take up slack and then squeeze through the rest.

+1 on the Gamo. I don't have any of thier rifles, but i have a PT-80 that is really cool. It works on CO2 and has a rifled barrel that gives great accuracy out of a 3 inch barrel. I would think that the rifles would give the same amount of accuracy and satisfaction.

I havew 2 PT-80s, and I love them (one is broken though). I am thinking of getting the V3, it's a semi-auto pistol that shoots BBs. The cool thing is it has a slide that blowsback with each shot, and the CO2 and BBs are held in the magazine, so you can carry back up mags with new CO2 in it for quick changes. Shoots at over 400 fps from what I have read.

Gamo rifles are really nice. Most of their rifles are Break Barrel, where as all you do is hold at the end of the barrel, and bend it towards the trigger. It breaks open and you put the pellet in. Close it back up and it's ready to fire. Most Gamo Break Barrel rifles shoot at 1000 fps. The vibration from it is killer on scopes though, so mount it nicely and use something to lock the screws in. I have personally shot pigeons, fairly consistently, at over 100 yards, so believe me they are accurate and powerfel.

For cheapness, Crosman has some nice rifles for the money. Their pnuematic pumps are kind of nice since they can shoot BBs or pellets. Throw in the fact that they are $35 at Walmart everyday and they just might answer your problem if you need it to fix a small rodent problem and don't plan on using it much more after that.

I got a RWS 92.  Velocity is about 700FPS.  It costs about $120.  It makes noise but not explosive like a firearm (more like someone dropping a heavy binder).  I was able to dispatch a rabbit that's been eating and shitting on my new lawn without alarming neighbors.

I use this :

Henry Pump .22 = $200

Aguilia Super Colibri Brick = $14

Fun Factor = Priceless

It's actually quieter then my Gamo air rifle and shoots 10x faster .
