I have an NJ complaint AR15 from LMT (Defender 2000) and I absolutely hate the look of the barrel without a muzzel brake/Flash hider.
The problem is I am not exactly sure what the difference between the 2 is and I don't know if I can just buy a new barrel to swap out this one.
Can anyone help?

1) Whats the difference between MB and FH?
2) What is the minimum length barrel I can buy in NJ?
3) How hard is it to take off the barrel that came with my rifle and put on a new one?
4) Where can I buy a barrel with the legal "tip" on it?

Thanks for any answers to any of the ^ questions.

The general consensus is that aside from it not suppressing flash, if the exit diameter is smaller than the entrance diameter it's going to be a MB and not a FH. I have a bbl with a MB on it that essentially looks like an A2 FH with a washer integrated into the end. I'd rather have a naked bbl. If your in SJ and wanna trade or are planning on selling yours, PM me

Barrel has to be 16 inches, but you can do a 14 inch barrel with a 2 inch break to bring it to compliance.
Changing the barrel on an AR is not difficult but a little tedious and it requires special tools. A gunsmith can do it pretty quickly.
It is also an option to get your current barrel threaded and have a break perminantly attached.
As for question 1 - I don't know the technical/ legal destinction.

1) Whats the difference between MB and FH?
A flash hider "significantly reduces the flash of the firearm".  Clear as mud, right?  As others have said...  if the muzzle device has an exit hole approx. the diameter of the projectile, it's a brake/compensator.  If the exit hole is much larger, then it's a flash suppressor
2) What is the minimum length barrel I can buy in NJ?
NJ follows federal law...  minimum barrel length of 16", measured from the face of the closed bolt to the end of the muzzle.  If any muzzle device is permanently attached, then it counts towards barrel length.
3) How hard is it to take off the barrel that came with my rifle and put on a new one?
Very easy if you have the tools, which consist of an upper receiver vise block, a barrel wrench, and a torque wrench (for re-installing).  Without those tools, kinda tough
4) Where can I buy a barrel with the legal "tip" on it?
Easier to purchase a "pre-ban" barrel, and have someplace like Adco or a local gunsmith pin/weld on your choice of muzzle device.  You can also send your barrel to the same places to have it threaded and a muzzle device pinned/welded.

Here's a couple of nice options for comp/MB's.

Smith Enterprises (vortex brake)

Troy Industries (medieval)

Troy Industries (claymore)

This is the same concept (roughly) but came out before the claymore existed.  I have this on my M4 currently and it works out pretty nice, and also looks a lot better than a standard Birdcage as far as I'm concerned (though looks wise I would have put the claymore on if it was around when I was building this)

Just get your barrel threaded to the standard AR thread pitch. If your handy, perm the brake yourself, or take it to a smith. Should cost about 1.00 bucks to get is perm'ed.

Ok...so I really think I would like to get my current barrel threaded and have a MB permanently attached.
Does anyone know of a place I can go in South Jersey (Camden County area or thereabouts)?

Been using the FSC556 for a year or so, drilled and pinned it myself nd had a friend weld the pin in place.
Not the cheapest piec, but it does work nicely and is just NJ legal.

Battle Comp 1.5 is pre drilled & can mount to a 14.5 barrel for compliance, and now the bad news, they are $155.

The claymore's ban compliant?

I'm no lawyer, but I don't see why it's not.  It's a muzzle brake, definitely not a flash suppressor...

I know a place that may do it in camden county but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to speak his name.
