Barron cited for reckless driving Tuesday, August 05, 2008By DAVID BREWERTimes Staff Writer [email protected] Speeding, running a stop sign listed on police records More than a decade after sponsoring legislation prohibiting small town police from writing speeding tickets on interstates, state Sen. Lowell Barron faces a Sept. 16 court date in Covington County on a reckless driving charge. Twelve years ago, Barron, D-Fyffe, sponsored a bill to prohibit police in towns with less than 19,000 residents from writing speeding tickets on interstates through their towns. The legislation came after he received two warning citations for speeding - one after he was clocked by Clanton police going 95 mph on Interstate 65; the other after a patrolman in Argo cited him for going 92 on I-59. In both cases, Barron got the warnings after he showed officers his legislative identification. State law gives legislators immunity while traveling to and from Montgomery for legislative functions. A phone message left Monday with Barron to comment on the reckless driving ticket he received July 27 was not returned. Barron, 66, was also cited for running a stop sign and, according to court records, he pleaded guilty two days later. Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams Jr. said Barron was clocked by one of his officers driving at a "very excessive" speed on Alabama 137, "a favorite highway" for motorists traveling between I-65 and the Florida state line. He said the officer also saw Barron cross a double yellow line to pass another vehicle and run a stop sign at the U.S. 29 intersection. Williams said he did not know how fast Barron was driving, but it was in his officer's report. However, a copy of the ticket obtained through the Covington County District Court did not show his speed. Williams said his officer cited Barron outside town but was inside the city limits by the time he stopped him. Because the alleged traffic violation occurred outside the city, he said, Barron's case is a matter for the district court. A report that Barron's driver's license was suspended after being cited for reckless driving is not true, Williams said. He also denied a report that Barron told the officer he was speeding in order to get away from someone who looked like a member of Hell's Angels. http://www.al.com/news/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/base/news/121792773191360.xml&coll=1 ![]() Changing the laws and having immunity didn't help the bitch out this time. |

barrons a douche but i actually agree'd with that law banning small town od from runiing speed traps on the interstates. before that was enacted MANY barny fife style depts made ther income by doing that, MANY times it was abused. i haven't seen any eveidence where keeping the locals off the interstate for speed traps have hurt public safety. |
He didn't get it changed for that reason. It happened because he kept getting caught himself and certain legislators kept getting caught DUI in Clanton. |
i agree but it's stil good legislation imho. and yes lowell barron and comapnay are douchbags. |

It reminds me of the time Alvin Holmes was pulled over on suspicion of DUI (BTW, the car video revealed that he either spilled a drink in his lap or pissed himself) The deputies drove him home (the legislature was in session so he was immune). Anyhow, he claimed that he was pulled over because the deputy was racist; when it was revealed that deputy who initially pulled him over was black, he claimed that the Montgomery sheriff--a democrat who had nothing to do with it--was racist and had always had it out for him. I guess Barron can't play the race card. |
