OK, who has any ideas on the best way to store rifles and pistols for approx. 18 months, and not have them rusted when I get back?

[arfcom] Lend them to me and I'll take good care of them [/arfcom]

Seriously, a good coating of CLP and a controlled environment should be fine.  Meaning something like a safe in a heated house, with a goldenrod.  I have guns I've done with this that I haven't touched in 18 months and they're fine.

In an uncontrolled environment, slap a bunch of cosmoline on them after removing the wood.  Messy but effective.

There are gun storage bags that have a corrosion inhibitor. I don't remember the brand name but I'm sure somone will be around shortly who does.

Vacuum packing with a few desiccant packs for good measure .
No O2 = No oxidation .

Keep in mind that normal plastic vacuum bags are O2 permiable.  My guess is that with some desiccant, this would be good enough for 18 mos. but I'd go with the specialty gun storage bags myself.  CLP coating in a climate controled house should be fine, though.

I have had exellent results with the KleenBore product,They make little ziplock style(pistol) which are great for ammo storage.

I clean and prep the rifle so it's ready to fire, put it in a 'silicon sock" type thing(this is to help keep the bag intact..
Put the rifle in a Kleenbore bag, along with some dessicant .
Vacuum bag the whole shebang.
Repeat  the vac bag for a double layer if it will get rough treatment.
Include a way to ID what is inside, there's nothing like finding an SKS instead of 10/22.You might want to make up a code or number system, you can be creative and try to diquise size shape and weight.

The Kleenbore bags work great, and you can put some double-faced tape inside and stick on some fresh dessicant also before sealing the bag.  Just make sure the gun, or whatever metal part you're putting in there is oiled too.  The pistol size bags have a zip-loc closure, but the rifle ones have an open end that you have to seal a different way.

Sounds like the bags are the way to go.

Bonded Militec-1!!!  And you can get Militec-1 Grease as well.  The GoldenRod, as mentioned above, is phenominal, I have used them for years with no issues.  Bags and or tubes are great as well.  You could always give them to a very trusted friend!!!

How quickly would you need the bags and or goldenrod? I might be able to get them cheap.

hmmm, cosmoline works great. I have stored weapons for years doing the folowing 1) coat with regualr old axle grease 2) wrap in a clear garbage bag 3) put in a safe with a golden road.

You really need something that will stick where you put it.

Well, looks like I won't need to be storing anything anymore.  Thanks for the good tips.
