[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Bird identification request.

Saw this when I came to work this morning, it was BIG, I'd say 15" tall. I'm guessing golden eagle which would be odd, at least to me for N. FL. Seen them in WY. Or maybe juvenile bald eagle? Photos are crappy as it was a ways off, used full digital zoom and braced against a tree. It was preening itself so no, it's not a headless bird. Too big to be a hawk. Hopefully the coloration will be enough for a positive ID.

I don't believe it's an Osprey.

Broad-winged Hawk possibly.....?

Not an Osprey, I can ID them easy. Closest thing I've found so far is a Swainson's Hawk. I think I'll toss the binoculars in the truck and hopefully get another look.

I think you might be right. From the feather and beak coloration it looks like a Golden Eagle.

And the Golden Eagle is a Florida raptor. They aren't as common as a Coopers Hawk or Osprey, but they are though out Florida.

That's a tough one.

I see yellow feet and a yellow beak. In photo three, it looks like there might be some white coming in on the tail feathers.

I would guess that a juvenile Baldy would fit the bill.

I would lean toward the most common species when trying to make a tricky ID.

Both Ospreys and Bald Eagles are common in Fla......if it ain't one then it's probably the other.

It was dark under it's wings and it's wing tips came somewhat to a point, the feathers were not parted like you see on a vulture or an adult eagle or hawk.
