Dean Forest......... ![]() What? Let's just say that customer service is not why you go there..........................................unless you have hundred dollar bills hanging from every pocket Until Mission Essential came to Savannah, they were the only game in town, knew it and acted like it.................................. JMHO - YMMV |

I went to Dean Forest today. I was fairly impressed with their store. Its small but they carry some good products and the people there were very helpful. One of the guys even offered to take a gun off the rack so I could put the VCAS sling on it and see how I liked it. I left without a sling(only because the wife was waiting in the car) She just doesn't understand why I |

I like that sling. The quick release is nice so you don't knock your hat or sunglasses off when you take the gun off. I imagine it could be real useful if you get hung up or take an unplanned swim. The metal hardware is tough and I bruise like a peach so the padding is really quite necessary.

I like the BFG stuff for options and versatility. But a lot of the bigger packages really aren't useful unless you are a contractor or you own a bunch of different weapon systems and want one sling for them all. Oh...and I also like the padding. I'm willing to pay a little extra for it, we don't all wear armor all the time. |

Ah, Dean Forest. I once went in there and politely inquired about their transfer policy. The guy looks up, says its like $25 if they dont carry the gun, but $50 if they do sell it there.
He asked me what I was interested in, which, at the time was an AK74. He didn't say "yeah, I can help you with that," or, "what type are you looking to go with," or anything else like that. no. he then looks at me like i just said I'm Obama's biggest fan, and asks me why I would want that over the standard AK, like I was some kind of idiot. I tried to explain that the ammo was cheaper (he told me its impossible to get) that its just different than what I've had before (he asked why change now?) and that I just wanted it because I wanted it ("well, suit yourself, but there are better options out there, just look around the store" he says). dont believe Ive been there since. now that mission essential is there, I really dont miss the ammo, either. dont get me wrong, there are some decent people that have worked in there from time to time, guys who are good regulars out at the richmond hill range, but theres a core group of "im the shop keeper, you're the idiot" attitude, and its a shame. hell, i had bought a few thousand rounds from them by that point, i realize thats not to much on the broad spectrum of things, but for a high-school and then college age guy, thats already a good piece of business. customer value or lifetime value, for that matter, is not a known term in that place. |

The padded sling with metal hardward and the cobra quick release buckle is about $100. Anyone paying that much for all that crap on a sling needs therapy. LOL... Not only am I going to drop some serious cash on a sling, but I'm gonna drive an hour to do it! I'm a raging lunatic

It's Cooler in Pooler!
DFG - $$$ It's gotten better since Jim bought out Randy, and they are CLass III now - have suppressors in stock. The transfer policy is better now - used to be they would not do a transfer on a gun they have in stock, nevermind if the price differance was 300+....lol. |

Just a For Y'alls Info update on Dean Forest Guns:
I visited them for the first time yesterday while the wife was doing the beach thing. A guy named Jim greated me courteously when I walked in the door and offered to assit me if I was looking for anything. I declined and proceeded to check out the store. About 7 other people walked in while I was there and they all received the exact same coutesy & professionalism regardless of age, nationality, skin pigmentation, or gun knowlege IQ. Well OK, the dude that brought in the fresh homemade amish bread or whatever that stuff was got preferential treatment. He earned it. They had a very well organized gun selection. They were very willing to let you fondle any of the goods and answer whatever questions you had to the best of their ability. Their prices ranged from fricking awsome to average to kinda high. They had a black SCAR for $2350 which ain't bad considering what some are paying for the latest hotness. I bought a slightly used pistol w/4 extra mags that are usually expensive as hell included from them for about $450 less than what a new one costs. Their ammo prices were HIGH for almost everything behind the counter. $40 for a 50 round box of S&B .45!?? The mil surp stuff they had out in the showroom area was IMO reasonably priced considering what shipping and handling costs and they're a for profit business. They had an ample supply of everything. On the holster side they had a decent selection of SERPA's, Tagua leather, Fobus, Itac, and a few DeSantis on display. I can't fault him for stocking what the usually cheap, ill informed consumer demands. I run a small business too and have tried to stock the good stuff and it gets old trying to explain why your stuff is more expensive than the big box store down the road or on some damn website. They had one entire rotating rack diplay of nothing but BFG products. They didn't have every single thing they made but they did have a decent selection of slings, DAP bags, EWL loops, Trauma Now kits, and other odds and ends. I did not see one of the super dooper cobra buckled slings so if that's what you want I'd call ahead and make sure they run up the road and get one in stock before you drive a long way. As always YMMV |

Ask our very own BookHound about QD buckles on a sling. He launched a rifle (at a Hack class I believe) when one failed.
As for me, I use a BFG Simple Sling. I open it up, run the end with the buckle through the slot in the buttstock, and run the other end to my sling loop up front. I have no need for slings that are akin to a Swiss Army knife. |

Bookhound,
What type of quick release failed? I ask because I'm impressed with the cobra buckle that BFG uses. DFG had some, but you have to rat through the BFG rack and the buckle isn't obvious. I don't have a quick release on either end of my sling so it seemed like a good idea. Wilezcoyote, I think the Corbon .45 was about $40; the S&B .45 was about $26. I haven't shot either in a .45 ACP, so I'm not sure what kind of value either is. |
