Finally got around to go shooting today.  Went to the brandywine range for the first time.  I had the pistol range to myself.  Then went over to the rifle range and a bunch of guys with ar's were just packing up.  Had the range to myself the whole time.  It was great.  Talked to a guy who came out of the woods from squirrel hunting but other then that it was just me.

Is it always this empty?  I usually go to the one west of stauton but will go to brandywine if it is always that empty.  Both are the same distance from me.

Shot my cmmg 22 conversion for the first time and it shot great.

I've never shot at it or been to it FWIW, but I need to stop by sometime I'm over to Ashby arms since it's on the way home.

Normally public ranges over here on this side of the mountains are like that, you'll get a few folks on the weekends, but hardly any through the week, except in the fall when it's deer season.  That one I figure is a bit busier since it is closer to Hburg.

Heck, I go to a public range that is a bit over year old up here in a state forest, and have yet ever shot with anyone  Life over here is great when it comes to shooting

It's normally empty. I normally try and go during the weekdays when it's guaranteed barely anyone will be around. It's a nice place to just screw around and do whatever you need at your pace. It's also much cleaner than it used to be, though it seems like people are beginning to leave their trash on the range again.

Yeah it was nice being able to shoot and move, rapid fire, draw and fire.  Sure beats sitting at a bench shooting a round every second.

Next time I go I'm bringing a trash bag.  It wasn't too bad, but could use some work.

Yeah, I normally try and pick up anything large like computer cases and the like. I'll leave plywood out as people can actually use that for setting up targets.

I need to figure out a better way to setup targets though, especially at the pistol range. There are so many rocks just under the dirt (on a mountain? Who woulda-thunk-it) that the cheapy metal stand I have is hard to setup. I'd build a target stand out of wood or PVC, but transport and storage would be an issue.

You'll have to post up next time you head over there. If I'm not busy with school I might head down there. Haven't been to the range in a while.

Will do, I need someone to go shooting with.

I was thinking about the PVC thing too, but build it with threaded ends so it can unscrew and break down.

I was thinking along the same lines, but even simpler. Just a standard A-frame, but use a friction fit with T pipes. Just get 8-10 pipes cut to length and buy 4-6 adapters and voila. I'm just too lazy. After my complete failure trying to build a workbench out of 2x4s, I've tried to take a sabbatical from building stuff.

I made a stand out of PVC that I use to take to one of the ranges over here.  It's made pretty much exactly like the plans Here  I didn't glue the two halves together, so it could be transported in just about any vehicle.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was looking at except with the uprights being PVC. Probably a better idea with the wood. My dad's coming up this week so I might buy the stuff to build one and drive us down to Brandywine before he leaves.

How far away is this from the nova area? I cant stand the indoor shoot at paper target ranges around here. Im from the country and love to shoot up old computer cases and such.

From centreville it looks like about 2.5 hours

If you want to check google maps put in brandywine, wv as the destination that should give a good estimate.  Take about 10 minutes off the directions time because the range is a lot closer to the VA line than the town is.

You'll probably want to check out The Cove in Gore, VA.  It's a campground with a range, same style.  IIRC it's $8 to use the range, but you'd probably save that in gas trying to get out to Brandywine.

From anywhere along 95 in NOVA, it's about 2.5-3 hours. If you're in up near the MD border (Arlington, Fairfax, Woodbrige) take 66 to 81. Anywhere farther south, go west over the mountains. Much more scenic drive than 66/81, but you can also get stuck behind people who think going up and down a moutain requires a speed limit of 15 MPH.
