Got there a bit before two. Hardly anyone there.
There was a dude at the 50yd side having trouble with his AK type rifle. Failure to fire...feed problems...something. The bench next to me had two guys shooting what the owner called a "new AK variant. Made by the same people in Russia who make the Russian AK. It shoots .223" It had a rifle stock on it...and it also had unconventional looking furniture in the "hand guard" area too. Very unusual looking, but the guy says it's cool. No hi-cap mags for him, though. No such thing as preban AK .223. There was a guy to my left with a Bushy 20" with some type of optics mounted on top of the carry handle. Several hunting rifle guys showed up and were scattered about the place. While I was waiting for a cease fire, I walked down to the 50yd area to take a look around...and two new shooter showed up with four rifle cases. This guy had the toys! Already out on the bench was a new HK .45 cal. Similar to the SL8....but not the same...I don't think. Amazingly light. Beautiful iron sites. You have two choices with regard to the sights. With a flip of the rear sight, it's a completely different sight...not just a different size aperture. Then he pulls out the FN PS90/P90. Small caliber projectile...but crazy funky looking rifle! Also light weight. He had an AK in another case... I had to get back to the line! A bit windy out there. My target blew away. That was a first. The two range officers that I always see there were a little extra friendly today. Both stopped to chat for a moment or two. Now that my newer stuff is sighted in, I might be frequenting Calverton for a while. Brookhaven is perfect for sighting in a rifle, but I think I want to get all "tacticool" and shoot while laying in the dirt. |

Sounds like a Veper in 223.
IIRC there are pre-ban Norinco AK's in .223. The HK no doubt was a USC The RO's... 2 older guys, or one young one old? (just curious) |
