I am getting the itch to build an AR…

Obviously the first step will be to buy the lower. But after that? I have been told not to assume any one upper will fit every lower, and so on. So what should I do or be aware of? Is getting  a parts kit better? Or picking up parts as I go?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

ETA: I ask here as I have seen many folks' builds and I know I can trust the advice given.

Upper/lower fit issues?

I have not had a upper/lower fit issue since I owned an original Palmetto Armory (made by SGW/Oly) lower.

Actually your first step will be to buy the tools and the manual.

You could always buy a trick flash hider and build your gun around that. I have heard of guys in this very home town doing it.

Buy a parts kit instead of buying all the parts separately. I assembled a lower using a CMT parts kit... good stuff!

Your good to go with basically any upper, just stick with the major manufactures and you'll be OK.

Just get yourself a matched upper/lower receiver set...

Then do what you have to do.

Hows that for a bunch of different answers?

Honestly, I have never had a problem after several builds.

That is what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Just thought I read the opposite somewhere...

I will buy the lower first as an election is coming.

I mean this in the nicest possible way...

You have 2 ARs, you might want to lean them backwards and forwards first and before you start a build.

If you go forward with the build, I would do everything you can to befriend someone like Grumpy who knows what he is doing and can not only help, but teach you.  Any idiot can screw one together but there are tips and tricks some like he can show you to do it "right" ....

you make a good point...

As we speak I am reading through some books on the AR...

The build is more of a long term plan...than a immediate goal.

I've never had a serious problem with upper/lower fit. My first build (Oly PCR-99 lower and M&A Parts upper) was a tight fit when first built, but after a few hundred rounds it fit together much better.

I'd go with an Oly lower and a kit from M&A or Model 1.

I agree with C&7 about the learning curve. Since there is no rush I would get the parts together and build it at a LCR. That way you and others can see how to do it correctly. Grumpy is a great teacher as are several others. Buy some quality goodies to go along with it and the value soars. I have stopped buying any mismatched uppers/lowers. They all seem to fit, but the matched uppers and lowers line up in other areas much better. JMHO

+1... PLUS, in the event you NEED to sell, matching uppers/lowers fetch a little more money than Frankenguns... Which makes it a bitch when you have a 2 Stag lowers, LMT lower, Oly Upper, and Bushmaster upper sitting in the safe looking for mates! Sure I COULD put them together and have complete rifles, but where is the fun in that?!?!?!?

My $.02
Just from ARFCOM allegiance, I'd never buy from M&A, most of the build I've done are with 50% to 75% Model One Sales parts/kits/ect.

Oh I agree in theory with C&7. I want to learn as much as I can about the AR and improve my ability and knowledge first and take some classes. Those are important to me. Ideally, I would prefer to wait a couple years, get myself up to par, and then build. But do I have a couple years?

It has been said here to get your stripped lowers prior to the election. That is the Factor here guiding my purchases and decisions…but who knows. I am just trying to think ahead for now....and may just get the lower and wait till later to do more. I just don’t want to one day look back and wish I would have built, when I had the chance if things go bad on us.

But I'll still push if probably...
