Been thinking about buying a FAL but the prices for CA approved FAL's seam a bit high.   Is it possable to buy a CA approve FAL parts kit?

No such thing.  Parts kit are just kits without receiver.  CA rule requires fix magazine which is part of the receiver.

To be CA compliant, you need to fix a ten round or less mag in place.  And get an open top cover to aid in loading.  Don't  forget the 7 US compliant parts.  That's the Fed rule.

Yup.. Bought an STG-58 parts kit from DSA (excellent condition - having it reparkerized probably wasn't even necessary, but I'm a glutton for matching finishes) along with the compliance parts needed to make it federally legal (buttstock, pistol grip, hammer, trigger, sear, charging handle.. there might have been a couple more in there) and then bought some extra pieces - an AR15 style rear sight with windage adjustments, and stripper clip guide dust cover) then sent it out to Century Gun Works for assembly and refinishing with an Imbel series III receiver.

Of course, for a cheaper US-legal build, you could pin a US-made magazine (body, follower, bottom plate) and that counts as three parts as long as you pin the mag in place.

My camera sucks, so no pics for now... am working on a replacement.

The FAL is probably my favorite long gun now.

ETA: DSA makes CA-compliant models. You might want to check them out if you don't want to do it yourself.

First of all, there's NO such "CA approved parts kit" thing. Parts kit is parts kit, it is NOT a firearm. You may purchase whatever parts kit you like.

For CA FALs, there are a lot of solutions.

1) Buy parts kits and receiver(s) then BIY. Remember to comply the U.S. parts restriction.

2) Try DSA or Entreprise (yes, EntREprise). I heard that they have quality FAL rifles.

3) Try Ohio Rapid Fire. Basically they could acquire FAL rifles from Century Int'l Arms and do the CA-legal stuff for extra $60.00 for ya.

Happy hunting for FALs

All you need to be Kaliban Kompliant is to take the mag release from your kit and follow these directions; webshooters.org/diy_california_fal.htm, and get/ make a 10rd mag.
The stripper-clip top covers are helpful, but many guys just load through the ejection port.

I have small fingers and it is not easy, I can't imagine anyone with big hands trying to load through the ejection port.

..and don't forget those US-made compliance parts.. don't just buy a kit and mod the magazine catch or Mr. Alphabet can do bad things to you, and you don't ever want to give them a tangable reason to.

I have the DSA stripper clip upper and can reload via the stripper clips faster than I can change magazines when prone. At least the weapon and shooter remain facing the target using stripper clips.
