Well my wife is wanting to take a CCW class and I was going to do it again with her. Any recommendations?
Seems that there are a few around me to choose from but I am looking for something a little more professional than most I have talked to. Seems that about any blow Joe down the road is a trainer. Also looking for something where I am going to get my moneys worth out of it. I have noticed the price of these classes has gone up quite a bit in the last 5 years. Really $100 for 4 hours is asking a lot if you ask me. Well when there are 10-15 people in the class it is. Ive noticed other states have ccw classes for the $35-50 range. Anywhere between Joplin and KC along 71 would be great. I noticed that there are classes at Cabelias, but couldnt find any other info on them. I wouldnt mind find one that would teach a little more on the use of a handgun in the defensive roll. When I went it was about 2 hours of talking about laws and 2 hours of shooting. Mostly bench type shooting. Nothing on draw technique or defending. Any advice? |

Yeah find one that spends about three hours covering "the law" and a hour shooting. Seriously all the drawing drills in the world won't keep your ass out of the pokie if it's a bad shoot. Not trying to be to big of a smartass but you need to know how to protect yourself legally. Take a defensive handgun class or 10 after you/she gets your CCW. And practice at least monthly, I prefer weekly weather permitting.
Any advice? Jerry |

I really hope you did not get a Missouri permit your first time. Missouri law requires 8 hours of training, not 4. If you only had 4 hours in total you did not get your money worth. In my opinion the class can not be taught in 4 hours with the range time included. My class was a good 6 hours just on law, I felt I had a good grasp on everything when I was done but I wouldn't mind sitting through the classroom part again to brush up.
I am sure the KC/Springfield guys can chime in on recommendations but I would definitely NOT recommend going back where you took the first class. |

Sadly, I think there is a fair amount of supposed CCW Instructors, who short change their students and proved less that the state requirement... Is there, somewhere these can/should be reported too??? Mo attorney general would be a good start or the county sheriff. I personally cover all of the required points, and find staying under 8 hours to be difficult. If I am under that just gives me time to cover some info and techniques that really could help a student in a bad place. Personally I wish I could cover more of what I would like to but the law is quite clear on what must be covered. |

Thanks Wheelchairman! I do give the classes and rarely is a class at the state mandate of 8hrs, normally we end up at closer to 10. I'm about 30 min south of Joplin and I have a class scheduled for the 5th of Feb, however, if you want a good instructor in Joplin, Check out Tom Anderson at www.swmofirearmstraining.com he's a good instructor, I recommend him. and he has a class scheduled for the 29th of Jan.
