I just moved from Virginia to Houston. I have my CHL in Virginia which has reciprocity with Texas. I'm going to be getting my Texas driver's license this week and am wondering what I need to do to get my Texas CHL. Anyone have any ideas? Can I just go to the right office and get one since I already have one with Virginia? Or do I have to go through the whole process? Thanks. |
I can answer this one, I'm going through it now. First you'll have to get it inspected. Then you'll have to go to the tax office and pay the taxes. Make sure you fill out the correct forms. After that you can go to the DPS office and get you license. It's a pain in the balls. |

kgraber, If your CHL expires in a few years, you can still use it in TX. Just use it as a form of ID at the DPS. They will take your info and add it to the data base so you can use it here. If you want more info. just call the main offices in Austin so they can confirm. |
No they won't. His current license is valid in Texas until it expires. |
No, they will not enter his information from ANY other state's CHL into any Texas computer system. Or are you saying that he can use the out of state CHL as proof of ID to get a Texas DL? |
All that will do is have it show that he has a CHL when a LEO runs his DL. That way if he fails to show his CHL they will refuse to issue a Texas CHL. It does not put it in the Texas CHL database. |
