I'm not a leo or mil, and I'm one year short of getting my CCW. What options do I have in east Tn for meeting the eligibility requirements for the CMP?
Thanks in advance. |

You need to join an affiliated club, this is often the most difficult depending on where you live. If you can't find one in the online directory just give them a call and they'll help you. The 'live fire' requirement is pretty easy as it doesn't matter what you shoot (it can be practical pistol, bowling pin night or a steel challenge match, shotgun tournament, hell it can even be air rifle or the 5 rounds you shot to get your concealed carry licence!). Whatever you do, just get it done.....it's really cool having a rifle delivered right to your door! |

The live fire part is actually the issue for me. I'm 20, so I can't get my CCW yet, and I've always shot my guns at private ranges (i.e., friend's acreage), so I don't have any experience with competitions or anything like that. Do I just show up at a public range and get the rangemaster to sign off on something? |

Check into the service rifle CMP Service Rifle clininc at Oak Ridge Sportsmans Association, I believe it meets the requirements. What kind of clinic would this be? Do you have a link? Here's a link for the New Shooter Clinics at ORSA: http://orsahp.com/new_shooters_clinic_faq.aspx Several years ago when I lived in Knoxville I attended one and it was a lot of fun. I ended up shooting a few high power matches because I had such a good time at the clinic. |
