We are going to have a CMP match on May 29th at Pinetucky Gun Club in Augusta, GA starting at 9AM. It's the first one I have personally put on, but have plenty of good help and encouragement from the club manager who has done these.

Everything will be from the 100 yard line, in three sections, one with standard 100 yard targets, then 300 and 600 yard reduced targets. There is more info about the CMP matches at CMP info , but I may relax some rules to get new shooters involved. If you have any questions either ask them here or e-mail me. I'll give you some kind of answer that includes "sure, you can come out and shoot" somewhere in all of that.

Sounds like fun...I'll need directions to the range.

There are directions on the clubs web-site, but if you will tellme which direction you are coming from, I'll try to confuse the situation, I mean help out, a little more. It's really not that hard to find and the facilities great.

I printed out the directions, thanks.

Is it an 800 agg or 500?

I dunno yet, I'll get the details out as soon as I get them worked out. I have to have a feew more conversations with a few people who have done these in the past. Any suggestions will certainly be considered though. There are pro's and con's to longer or shorter matches, don't want the youngun's to get board and don't want to have to wake up the old timers.

If it's on a 100 yd reduced range will anyone be pulling pits or will we be walking down range and scoring the guys target next to us?  How many firing points are on the range?  How many shooters are you expecting to show up?

(Am I a pain in the ass or what?)

For the inexperienced and ignorant amongst us (me) please let us know what hardware, ammo and skills are required. I'm interested but I don't have time to wade thorugh the volumes of CMP data on the web.

Yeah, but that's fine. We have 20+ firing points, but no pits, you gonna' hafta' do some walking. If walking is too tough, we'll get a pit bull to chase you down and see if you can run. Seriously, if walking is a problem, I will try to have my golf cart out there by then or we can get someone to score and replace targets.

This is the first time I have put one of these on, so it will be far from a 'sanctioned' match as I am learning as I am going on this. I'm not sure about the turnout at all, but I am expecting upwards of 20, especially since it's something we haven't done at the club in a couple of years and several memebers that normally don't come out to the pistol matches have expressed some interest in it, as well as people from out of town. Plus, it's only going to be held on the fifth Sunday's of the month, but it is going to be held every fifth Sunday, so we can develop a pattern.

Once I see what it takes to put one of these on in reality and get some feedback from the maiden voyage, I'll run away screeming like a little girl. Once I get over that part of it, I'll take steps to improve upon it for the next match so maybe we can grow this into a little of something. If it is smooth enough and time allows in future matches, or there is enough interest generated, I would also like to hold the smallbore match. This would be especially good to get children involved.

I promise I will get as many details out as soon a possible. I'm not going to turn anyone away from a match, so don't let the equipment regs get beside you too much. It's too easy to put a notation beside a score/shooter explaining 'illegal' equipment to not permit them to shoot, know what I mean? It's all about the smell of the powder and the bang to me.

The range in the upper most  right portion of the picture is the rifle range we will use for the match.

Hardware is easy, any service rifle can be used regardless of when the US armed forces used it.

You're going to shoot in a couple different positions, standing, sitting and prone.  Because of the sitting and prone a sling would be helpful but not an absolute necessity.  Ammo's easy, you'll need 88 rounds for an 800 agg match, 58 for a 500 agg match of whatever your rifle will shoot.  Don't spend a bunch of money on equipment that High Power shooters tote around with them unless this is something that you really want to do, it's kinda pricy otherwise.

My guess is that with this being the first match and we won't be pulling targets between shots on the slow fire portions someone might be able to talk Bill Z into letting someone give a little "clinic" before each of the positions.  Riverbend Gun Club does this at their 100 yd reduced matches and quite a few of those folks have begun shooting across the course.

Bill Z, if I'm stepping on your toes Sorry, tell me to shoosh.  I don't know how many of the folks on the GA forum are HP shooters other than me, and it would be great to get more folks involved.

Shooosh? NoSiree', I can use all of the help I can get, like I've said, this is the first time I'll have put one of these on. Several people at the club have been wanting to do this, including myself, but no one would/could step up to the plate and give it a whirl. Since I'm real good at letting my Joe Louis mouth overload my Mickey Mouse ass, I said, "I'll do it!"

So, in all honesty, I'm as curious and interested to see how this is going to go off as everyone else.

I'll give you what help I can, which means that I've got to read some CMP rules.  I know it's basically NRA highpower, but I don't want to give anyone bad info.

That's like a whole other AL state isn't it?

I'll see who else I can bring, I've got a couple new shooters I've been working with and a reduced match would be right up their alley.  I don't want them to even know about pulling pits until they're hooked.  No sense in letting them find out this HP stuff is work.

Got two or three shooters from Conyers that can make it...
Have participated in a number of these, and would make one suggestion...
The JCG matches are fired at 200 for the most part, so I would suggest using
the reduced target for 200 on all stages, going to discourage some beginners with
that 600 reduced stuff anyhow...tiny target...keeps it simple...
The normal match starts with 5 sighters and 20 for record prone...25 minute limit.
Next, rapid prone from standing 2+8 with mandatory reload...10 rounds 70 seconds...
Third rapid sitting from standing 2+8 with mandatory reload...10 rounds 60 seconds...
Last slow fire offhand (standing), single load 10 rounds...10 minutes...
Targets scored after each stage by someone other than yourself...ie. the guy next to you
or ?
This is simple, and having slow fire prone first lets the new shooter gain some confidence from
the easiest to shoot position...Re-reading your post, I assume this is going to be a "Garand" type match?, rather than a reduced across the course?  Could get a little more complicated unless it is more defined....

Thanks Rhino, I'm in the learning stages on this one. I will probaly have a 'mid' match going on at the same time for people who's equipment is out of the guidlelines sothey can shoot. Is this common practice? I'm thinking if I can get a core group of shooters the equipment will eventually conform or we'll get a bunch of shooters out for the'mid' match that wouldn't normally be able to shoot in something like this.

I'm just interested in putting on a match that people like.

Any thoughts?

I am very interested in shooting this match. Would a Postban Colt factory AR  be an acceptable rifle? I have a Norinco M14S I could use, but would rather not. I am guessing my bubbaized 03's would be a no-go.
