A guy I know recently took a CCW class. The instructor said some licenses are issued either as Concealed Weapon or Concealed Handgun Permits. It's a toss up which one you get. The Concealed Weapon Permit allows you to carry knives concealed with blades greater than 3 inches. Is any of this true?

Your confusing what which state issues what.
In Colorado, you will be issued a CCW for pistols only (does not cover other weapons), and there is not one for knives and other weapons issued in this state. In Fl, a CCW permit covers not only pistols, but knives and other weapons too, and what he was talking about when comparing the differences of permits and what state issues what. |

I was referring to Colorado. The instructor had students in a shooting class show their permits. Some were labeled as "Concealed Weapons Permit" and others were labeled as "Concealed Handgun Permit." Both types were issued in Colorado. My question is are they equivalent?

Wording on the permit is meaningless. Read the statute. It is handgun only. And the statute is what counts.
That being said, El Paso County's original permits used the word weapons. Now it is handgun. I suspect that a lot of counties used the word weapon to mean handgun and have never changed it. An instructor that teaches contrary to the statute is asking for trouble. |

I figured it must be a county thing. Just got mine from Douglas and it says weapons. I was fairly certain about the handgun only thing, but I'm going to check with the instructor to see what he actualy said in this class. What I heard is second hand from a student.

NAD Im pretty sure the student just heard wrong. The CHP doesn't have anything to do with anything but Handguns. |
